MARK SANFORD ADMITS AFFAIR - A SOUTH CAROLINIANS PERSPECTIVE
South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford surprised the Nation and especially the State of South Carolina during a press conference called to explain his disappearance since last Thursday.
Staffers had previously announced that Sanford had been hiking on the Appalachian Trail taking a little R & R after the recent battle with the legislature over taking federal stimulus money in which Sanford had refused to request causing the legislature to take the Governor to court which forced him to request the money.
But the press conference which was expected to explain his R & R hiking trip revealed an unexpected turn as Sanford announced he had been to Argentina to end a year long affair he had been having with a woman he had met eight years ago and befriended during troubling times in her marriage.
As a citizen of South Carolina and one who supported Governor Sanford I am greatly disappointed in him and in his affair. Sanford has been a good Governor for the state and has had strong support from both Republicans and Democrats as he has followed a fiscally conservative agenda. Sanford is in the final two years of his second and last term as Governor.
He had been considered by many as a top choice for the GOP nomination in 2012 for a run at the Presidency and his recent high visibility on the national political stage would tend to lean toward Sanford making moves to that end. He was the Chairman of the Republican Governors Association, a position that he resigned from in light of the revelation of the affair.
My personal disappointment follows two distinct avenues. Sanford has always portrayed himself as a conservative Christian and family man who has four children from his 20 year marriage. The affair greatly diminishes his family values stance which has been a hallmark of his political career. Also he was one of the rising stars in the GOP who I would have proudly supported had he announced a 2012 run for the Presidency.
His political career is finished because of the affair. While I do not expect him to be forced to resign as Governor, when his term is completed his political career will end. Additionally Sanford has opened the flood gates for the liberal media and Democrats to fire at conservatives and the GOP since Sanford was such a strong voice for both.
Had Sanford been a Democrat the affair would have been news for about a week and then dropped off the radar and forgotten. His political career would have continued with only a momentary blemish that would have been quickly forgotten. But the media double standard will vilify Sanford much more because he is GOP and a conservative.
I do not in the least defend his actions nor believe that his political career should continue in light of the affair. He is getting what he deserves and has sown. But liberals are allowed much more leeway with transgressions than conservatives and that is a fact.
My sincere hope and prayer is that Mark Sanford and his family can recover from this tragic fall of the Governor. While he finds forgiveness for his action I pray that he may also find restoration for the damage that he has caused for both himself and his family. Politically he has become a very damaged lame duck who has lost the trust and support of the people of South Carolina.
As a person I do forgive his transgression but as my Governor I cannot abide by the lie that he has lived and the trust he has broken with the people of this state. I do not necessarily wish for his resignation but do think that for the sake of his family, performing state duties will be detrimental to his and their recovery. If he resigns it should be by his choice and not forced by his affair. As for furthering his political career his term has ended. A truly sad day for the state, the Governor, his family and the people of South Carolina.

The governor should resign or be impeached. There is a related post at http://iamsoannoyed.com/?p=1930
Duh. You are blaming the Liberals, Democrats and Media for this fiasco? Is your name Rush or Sean by chance? You should seek help for your delusions.
The reason that the media would drop a typical Democrat is the running platforms that the GOP runs. GOP is supposed to be a party of family values, fiscal conservatism and personal responsibility. Sanford betrayed that image. He is no one to blame but himself and it is pointless to blame the media for Sanford's actions. Edwards was also roasted for his behavior. Why do so many Americans idolize these people? Politicians are scumbags no matter what side of the isle they are on.
Well, looking forward.. Governor Sanfords political aspirations are toast. My question is who's political career just got a major boast for 2012? Palin? Huckabee? Newt?
Did the affair regarding Eliot Spitzer jsut blow over? No, he resigned. Mr. Taylor is a typical Neanderthal Republican Christian Conservative who wants to blame the Democrats for everything. I am surprised that he did not blame the Gay and Lesbian community for what Sanford did in his hate-filled diatribe.
Mr. Taylor, I was born and raised in South Carolina, so I know the bigotry, snobbishness and hypocrisy that run rampant in that state.
Keep you opinions, your bigotyr and your religion to yourself!
Don
FAMILY VALUES!!! Will somebody please think of the children!!
Since there are so many gutless anonymouse comments I will only respond to one in that anonymous thread who said I am blaming the media for what Sanford did. I guess in your scan of my post you neglected to notice the paragraph which stated, "I do not in the least defend his actions nor believe that his political career should continue in light of the affair. He is getting what he deserves and has sown. But liberals are allowed much more leeway with transgressions than conservatives and that is a fact."
Don - since you rambling was directed to me by name I will also respond accordingly. First the problem with liberals is that they believe in free speech except when the speech disagrees with them. Then the mantra which you used inyour comment is to shut up and keep opinions to yourself.
I have as much to make my opinion known as anyone else including you.
Next, I did not at anytime blame anyone for what Sanford did other than Sanford. What he did was of his own making and as I stated he will reap what he has sown.
To express concern for his family is only proper because of what they are and will suffer because of Sanford's actions.
As far as Spitzer is concerned he resigned of his own accord after his revelation and thatis also what I have stated should be the option for Sanford. If he resigns it should be of his choosing not forced out of office.
As far as Democrats having more leeway in matters like this, the list is endless of affairs and even a male prostitution ring by Barney Frank and the media has always played it soft with the left while seeking to destroy anyone conservative who transgresses. That is a fact that is undeniable.
My goodness, do you ever have a lot of judgemental people commenting in here, Ken. Perhaps they should remember that those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
I am sure you are disappointed and even though I'm not a SC resident, I feel badly about it too. It's not surprising when liberal politicians do something like this, but Republicans are supposed to have higher values and live by them. At least he didn't try to get away with saying "I did not have sex with that woman."
I don't believe he should be forced to resign either. After all, the liberals always hang onto their fallen politicians. However, I agree that this will hurt his career. There's absolutely no way around it, and I think his family will be better off if he resigns and tries to restore a very damaged relationship with them. I hope his wife is more into forgiving than some of the commenters on this post!
I feel for his wife and kids. I don't really feel sorry for the Governor because he did make a very bad choice and now he has to pay the piper. But I hope he learns something from this and genuinely feels badly about it and not only because he was caught.
(Sanford) Belief in God + Sin + Republican = hypocrite
(Bill Clinton) Belief in God + Sin + Democrat = Virile Stud
(Barney Frank) Major Sex scandal involving prostitution ring + Democrat = no big deal
(John Edwards) Cheating on wife who is struggling with cancer while running for office and whole staff knows about it + democrat = possible candidate for 2012
(Sanford) Sin + Republican = end of political career
I don't judge Sanford for having an affair. He's just another flawed human being like the rest of us. We all make poor choices in life that we regret later on. However, as an elected official, Sanford has to be held to a different standard here. He took a law enforcement vehicle illegally and drove it to the airport so that his car wouldn't be recognized or towed while he was on his trip. Then he misappropriated tax-payer funds to pay for his plane fare to Argentina. That's two strikes against him in my book. The third strike is that he would be stupid enough to think he could get away with this kind of deception, lying to his own staff and legislators, and walking away from the responsibilities of his office, not for a brief dalliance, but for days. When you add to this that he chose Father's Day weekend to make this trip, leaving his sons behind, you realize how utterly empty-headed and self-absorbed Sanford has to be. Finally, it is difficult not to consider the hypocrisy factor here. When you add all that up, the only logical conclusion can be that nobody that dumb should be allowed to run a city, much less an entire state.
I hope everything works out for him and his wife.
Double standard? Because he's a Republican? No. He's a HYPOCRITE and reveled in calling on others to resign for their moral shortcomings. Sanford called on Clinton to resign over a blowjob. Sanford went much further than Bill did.
Sanford called on Craig - a Republican - to reisgn, as well.
Sorry, but you're delusional.
Peace.
Anonymouse (not a typo) I'll repeat Miss T. Shore's comment here. Please attempt to pay attention:
"(Sanford) Belief in God + Sin + Republican = hypocrite

Good going, Ms. T!
I find it really hard to believe this story. First for a man to be so outspoken against audltery and then commit it just seems odd. Second he took this trip after being forced by our loving government to take money he did not want. Now who is to say they are not forcing him to make these statements to discredit his character. I mean this guy has voted against anything that was not fair to the people. Just the type of person they want out of government.
