REBUBLICAN, DEMOCRAT BOTH COURTING , "OCCASIONAL VOTER."

With politics taking the dirty turn as it usually does prior to an election has it caused a general lack of interest by eligible voters ? I mentioned this in The Sunday Commentary concerning the large number of voters who have little or no interest in politics until the final weeks before an election and that interest is even less during the Mid Term election because it does not involve a Presidential race. Statistically Mid Term elections have much less turn out than a Presidential election. Both the 1998 and the 2002 Mid term races had voter turn out in the mid 30% range of eligible voters while the 2004 Presidential race garnered percentages in the mid 50's. Mid Term elections also tend to be much more partisan and dirty since the candidate runs on state and local concerns and national concerns are secondary because of the lack of a Presidential candidate. This year seems to point to even less interest since both parties are aggressivly seeking the occasional voter who votes more on a whim than an decided plan to vote in advance. As I mentioned on Sunday unlike those of us who are political and news junkies and express our political activism through the blogoshpere or in general conversation with friends, co-workers etc. the average American is very uninterested in politics. Amazingly there is a large number who after the President and the Vice President do not know who the Speaker of the House is the Secretary of State or even their own United States Senators or House Representative. Those who follow politics and election cycles are either associated with and/or vote in accordance to party affiliation and if they consider themselves Independent vote in accordance to a conservative or liberal mind set or choose an Independent candidate. Which leaves a precious few voters who actually vote that have not already decided how they will cast their vote.

The Democrats believe that because of the dissappointment that the conservative base has with the Republican Party that it will cause many regular Republican voters to stay home on election day. This is a false assumption by the left and the scandalizing of this election will actually energize the conservative base rather than discourage. In the same respect the GOP fears the aggressive get out the vote campaigns that the Demcorats always spur to register voters. But in the past several elections the registration campaign by the Demcorats has proven to be unfruitful because while large numbers register only a small percentage actually go to the polls and vote on election day. So where does this leave the 2006 Mid Terms? The answer is that as usual the elections speculators who give very convincing arguments either direction really have no clue as to how the House or the Senate will turn out on November 7th. Recent past history shows that even when the pundints and the news media were claiming a back lash to incumbants by the voters after the election was over and the votes were counted 98% of all incumbants of both parties won re-election.

The true test of how the voter feels is not found in pre-election speculation nor in the exit polls because both are based on reaction by people who in the case of polls may not even vote and by numbers that can be manipulated by the pollster. The exit polls are a farce because they too can be manipulated as those who poll the voters after they have cast their vote can chose certain voters in accordance with how that type of voter usually votes. No the true test comes by the conscience of the voter when they enter the booth and look at the ballot without the news media breathing down their necks or the voice of a political pundint in their ear but only that voice that reminds each of us as free Americans that our vote counts and that in our Constitutional society we still are a , " nation of the people, by the people and for the people."

Amen brother - we agree that the will of the voters can only be seen on election day.

However, we disagree about the anticipated outcome. I think the House will turn over and the Senate will still be under Republican control but by only 1 or 2 seats.

I will say this Ken, it looks like may have been wrong about Lieberman. He looks to be in pretty good shape (although we have to see the actual votes). I may not like him, but the CT voters will decide. Whether he wins or not, CT will end up with a Dem senator. Lieberman will caucus with Dems.

Agree about Lieberman. The only reason the party abandoned him was because of his stance on the war. He still voted 95% down Dem lines. I felt from the beginning that Conn voters still wanted him.

You are also correct in your statement about our positions on the election. The people are the deciding factor. I still think the GOP will hold both chambers with a slim margine but only November 7th will tell.

Anyway Ken: You're right that most people don't have a clue who the Speaker of the House is... so I'm thinking they also cannot hold Hastert responsible for Foley, even if they know who Foley is.

I'm also thinking it doesn't help us to run a campaign against SF liberal Pelosi, as most people don't know who, or WHAT she is.

But if you told voters that the next leader of the House marched in the SF Pride Parade right behind the founder of the North American Man Boy Love Association they might pay attention.

Even more helpful is a simple set of questions:

Do you want to win the war in Iraq, if so, vote for Republicans
Do you want your taxes to go up or down. If up, vote for Dems; down vote for GOP.
Do you want to catch terrorists before they attack or give them rights? If you want to catch them, vote GOP, give them rights, vote Dem.
Do you want missile defense to protect against Iranian or North Korean missiles? If yes, vote Republican.
Do you want a strong defense or more failed social programs? Defense: vote GOP, more wasteful social spending, vote Dem.

Sure the questions are loaded... but no more so than the latest NYTimes poll which asked 12 questions about Mark Foley and not one about a single Democrat scandal.

Mike, it is nice to see you in fine name-calling form yet again.

We all agree, the voters will decide on who they want to lead the country.

I don't know rob, its a close one. But even if Dems win the House it will do nothing for them. Republicans notorioulsy legislate better from the minority, and Bush will veto everything the Dems hand him. But we'll see.

Highboy, I don't know what you are talking about. If you are in the minority you cannot actually accomplish anything because all of the committee chairmen/women come from the majority. Thus, all legislation is controled by the majority.

Blogger highboy said...

It won't matter Rob. The Republicans will still hold the senate and Bush will veto everything. Further, once Pelosi gets her face out there more and America figures out the Dems have no plan they'll remember why they voted conservative in the first place.

We'll see. It is becoming more and more clear that the tide is rising against the Republicans. The reasons are simple - Iraq is a mess, corruption and the Foley scandal is a mess, there is a fiscal mess with respect to record government spending, huge deficits for as far as the eye can see, and record debt accumulation. The conservative "plan" has not been good for America's interests.

As for the Pelosi comment, most Americans don't know who the Speaker is and don't really care.

It seems the basic bookend of this piece is the we in the U.S. have a lower voter turnout during midterms. No kidding. All that verbage only to state the obvious.

I wonder why the author feels he's qualified to say "What Democrats believe?"

If you want to know what Democrats believe, ask me, as I am one.

What Democrats believe is that the GOP is running on fear, and trying to equate Democrats with international terrorists. We also believe that we Democrats are the party of change, and that the country wants change; and for good reasons - the Republicans have screwed up, and screwed up big.

BTW everybody, as evidenced here, when you start hearing pre-elections squawking by the right wing about how exit polls can't be trusted, even via scientific method, what your really hearing is code for "expect voter fraud."

Maybe most people you know don't know who the speaker of the house is, but that speaks volumes for the crowds you rightwingers run with.

If you want the war in Iraq to drag on and on and on, vote Republican.

If you want higher taxes on the middle class, especially at the state and municiple levels, while the top two percent get all the benifits of classwarfare, then vote Republican.

If you want to let Bin Laden languish in Packistan, then obviously, vote Republican. If you want to distract from the war on terror, and pretend that because we're over there, they can't get us over here, then vote Republican.

If you want bellicosity and nuclear detonations from NK - rather than a freeze in nuclear programs, vote Republican.

If you want a weak defense coupled with weak social programs, and if you want to dismantle the New Deal, and in particular, Social Security, then by all means, vote Republican.

If you want to secure our nation here before we have to fight them anywhere, vote Democratic.

If you want a change in direction, vote Democratic.

If you want both a strong defense AND a strong effective social programs, vote Democratic.

Uh....I was going to pick apart Mike's America's list of questions one by one, a list obviously informed by watching ten minutes of The O'Reilly Factor, but I see MudKitty got here frist. Damn you!!!!! Anyways, darn nice comeback. It's weird, like Mike's America is in some sort of parallel universe where the Republicans aren't screwing this country into the ground. Must be nice there.

Highboy, one thing that will come as a result of the Dems taking the house is OVERSIGHT. Another would be that new and better ideas as to how to run this country might actually get to the floor for consideration. And although I wouldn't hold my breath, another result might be that the executive branch's excesses will finally be checked. But thats optimistic. They've rolled right over for Bush & Co. so far...
