JOHN MCCAIN WARNED OF MORTGAGE COLLAPSE IN 2005

Barack Obama has been playing off the fears that are running rampant in the market because of the collapse of several of Wall Streets major investment companies like Lehman Brothers. Attacking John McCain and trying to create the idea that McCain does not know what he is talking about and that he is ignorant when it comes to the economy.

For Mr. Obama's information John McCain saw this collapse coming as far back as 2005 and not only warned of the coming collapse but co-sponsored legislation to try and prevent it and go after the corruption that was causing much of the problem. Following is McCain's speech on the Senate floor during debate of Federal Housing Regulatory Act Of 2005 urging the Senate to pass the Act which fell to defeat after being blocked by Senate Democrats.

Mr. President, (referring to the Presiding Officer of the Senate) this week Fannie Mae’s regulator reported that the company’s quarterly reports of profit growth over the past few years were “illusions deliberately and systematically created” by the company’s senior management, which resulted in a $10.6 billion accounting scandal.

The Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight’s report goes on to say that Fannie Mae employees deliberately and intentionally manipulated financial reports to hit earnings targets in order to trigger bonuses for senior executives. In the case of Franklin Raines, Fannie Mae’s former chief executive officer, OFHEO’s report shows that over half of Mr. Raines’ compensation for the 6 years through 2003 was directly tied to meeting earnings targets.

The report of financial misconduct at Fannie Mae echoes the deeply troubling $5 billion profit restatement at Freddie Mac. The OFHEO report also states that Fannie Mae used its political power to lobby Congress in an effort to interfere with the regulator’s examination of the company’s accounting problems. This report comes some weeks after Freddie Mac paid a record $3.8 million fine in a settlement with the Federal Election Commission and restated lobbying disclosure reports from 2004 to 2005.

These are entities that have demonstrated over and over again that they are deeply in need of reform. For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs—and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. OFHEO’s report this week does nothing to ease these concerns.

In fact, the report does quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay. I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.

I urge my colleagues to support swift action on this GSE reform legislation."

Senate Democrats blocked the passage of the Bill and while it passed in the House it failed in the Senate because of the Democrats.

Additionally Obama has been claiming that the fault for this collapse lies in the policies of the Bush Administration and the Republicans using this as a way of finger pointing to John McCain when in fact the entire debacle was started under Bill Clinton. The Clinton administration dictated where mortgage lenders could lend and originally helped create the market for the high-risk sub prime loans now infecting the balance sheets of many of Wall Street's most revered institutions. If these institutions did not comply they were threatened with massive fines and penalties.

Clinton put the Community Redevelopment Act, a Carter era law designed to encourage minority home ownership, on steroids. And in so doing, he helped create the market for the risky sub prime loans that he and Democrats now decry as not only greedy but "predatory."

Two of Barack Obama's top staffers, James Johnson who headed the VP selection Committee and Penny Pritzer, Obama's campaign Finance Chair were both not only involved in this debacle but are attributed in creating the situations that began the sub prime lending schemes that caused the mortgage collapse.

Pritzer along with Earnst and Young working through Merrill Lynch created the sub prime financial engineering that created this meltdown. While Johnson was CEO at Fannie Mae when the Clinton Administration ordered the beginnings of the high risk market through the Community Redevelopment Act.

The very reform act that could have stemmed this collapse in 2005 co-sponsored by John McCain was voted against by Barack Obama who also was the third highest recipient of campaign donations from the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac PACS behind only Christopher Dodd and John Kerry.

The hypocrisy of Obama in claiming that the GOP , President Bush and by inference John McCain caused this problem and did nothing to prevent it when in fact just the opposite is true as it began under the Clinton Administration with its birth created by Democrats who are now involved with the Obama campaign, shows that it is Obama who is ignorant about the economy while McCain knows what he is talking about.

McCain's statement that the fundamentals of the economy are still strong has been backed up by the 3.3 % growth in the economy last quarter as well as all other key economic indicators still holding strong. Democrat claims that we are in a recession heading to a depression are scare tactics as even the definition of a recession is two consecutive quarters of negative growth. This economy has not even experience on quarter of negative growth. The mortgage debacle was caused by greed and sub prime loans that created a bubble that was bound to burst. A bubble that was begun by Democrats and their supporters.

A problem that McCain foresaw and tried to stem and Obama voted with Democrats to keep going. Then Obama hired the major instigators of the schemes that created the sub prime lending chaos as top staffers of his Presidential campaign. So who is actually in touch about the economy ? Well it certainly is NOT Barack Obama. Rather the proven foresight of John McCain as well as his understanding of how an economy actually works instead of trying to scare voters as Obama does proves that McCain is the candidate who will stem the tied of greed and bring necessary reforms while allowing the market based economy to continue to grow.

Ken, I don't agree with much of what you wrote. I could go point-by-point but you wouldn't agree anyway. I will say this - when you remove regulatory oversight as Bush and the Republicans did - that allows bubbles and corruption to take hold.

We can disagree on whether Republicans or Dems are more to blame for the problem. The reality is that there is some blame for both parties. But, all of that is largely irrelevant. The crisis is now here and the question is what should we do and who is better suited to deliver.

For McCain to say the "fundamentals of the economy are strong" is not only wrong, but just plain silly. If he doesn't think there is a problem, then how is he going to fix the problem. It shows Americans how out of touch he is.

The American financial and banking systems are collapsing and McCain wants to appoint a blue ribbon commission to investigate the causes for the problems. That is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard.

McCain appears lost and out of touch, and Palin has largely disappeared because of the mistakes she made about Freddie and Fannie, and the fact that she has been pushing for earmarks contrary to all of her false claims that she hasn't.

The poll numbers have dramatically shifted back to Obama over the last week and by Friday it will be even worse for McCain.

It also doesn't help McCain's economic "cred" when one of his top economic advisors (Carly Fiorina) says he is not qualified to run a large American corporation as she did yesterday.

Nor, does it help to have your top policy advisor (Holtz-Eakin) make the outrageous and ludicrous comment that McCain invented the BlackBerry. McCain admits to not knowing how to send an email - I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know what a BlackBerry is.

If these bozos are advising him on policy, why should Americans have any faith that he knows what is going on?

First Rob, the fundamentals are strong. 3.3% growth last quarter. Hmmm sounds like growth to me. There are certain aspects that do need reform and this mortgage situation is one of them. But also remember that investment companies take high risk and many collapse without a crises to set them off. EF Hutton for example!

Also in case you have been out of touch John McCain cannot send e-mail or use a computer because the injuries sustained while in captivity prevent him from using his hands and his arms to do simple things like using a computer, combing his hair etc.

Using this as an attack by Obama was a major blunder on his part because somebody did not do any research at all!

Rob, as far as the polls go the shif has gone to McCain. Some National polling has it tight but in battleground states McCain the trend is going toward McCain. Fl, Penn, Colo, Nev, Ohio even Mich are either in the McCain column or moving that direction. Even Wash State is not strong for Obama a usual liberal mecca. Some polls are even showing that NJ and NY may be coming into play for McCain.

Also among likely voters McCain still leads by 7. Indys are moving toward McCain. In Ohio for example there has been a 25 point shift from Obama being up with Indys by 17 to McCain being up by 8. That my friend is huge.

Also 40% of Indy voters in a National polling are going toward McCain.

McCain has also taken the lead in the electoral count and most polsters beleive that Obama must win COlo, Nev, NM and Penn in order to even have a chance.

Most now have taken FL off any chance for Obama, even in VA McCain is making huge strides a State that only a month ago was though lost to the GOP. Now McCain is leading by 2 or 3 depending on which poll you look at.

All in all Obama is not making this big comeback as you are truying to show but in actuality he is struggling to keep his head above water in State to State as well as likely voters which means a lot more than a general poll because likely voters will actually get out and vote.

Even in the youth vote that you have talked about so much Obama has had a 25% drop in the past three weeks!

OK Ken, we can see. I know before the 2006 election I was predicting huge gains for the Dems and you didn't agree.

This election I predict Obama wins by 4% in the national popular vote, and 80-100 Electoral College votes. On top of that, Dems will pick up at least 12 House seats and 4 Senate seats.

How do you see it?

Ken, I don't think it's so much that Obama is ignorant regarding the economy as it is he's an out-and-out liar! Well, he's probably both, come to think of it, but I'm sure he knows why this particular disaster has happened, but as usual will lie like a rug to put the blame elsewhere.

Poll numbers go up and poll numbers go down. Anything can happen in this election and nothing is a sure bet.

It also doesn't help McCain's economic "cred" when one of his top economic advisors (Carly Fiorina) says he is not qualified to run a large American corporation as she did yesterday.

Yes, and according to Joe Biden, he's probably not the best VP pick, and Hillary would have been a better choice.

Fiorina said all four of the candidates didn't have the experience to run Hewlett-Packard. Admittedly she had her foot in her mouth. It goes back to the executive experience issue, though.

Word, we all know polls shift, but there has been an incorrect assertion that McCain is getting stronger in the polls. That is clearly not happening. They are obviously swinging toward Obama.

Biden didn't say he wasn't qualified. He was showing deference toward Clinton.

Fiorina is an idiot. So what if she said stuff about Obama and Biden - she was a senior economic advisor for McCain. Why would you expect her to speak highly of the Dems? Her comments have nothing to do with the Dems. The problem is that after knowing John McCain, working with him so closely, and advising him on economic issues she doesn't think he could run a major corporation. How in the world can someone who isn't qualified to run a corporation be expected to run the country?

I've put out my prediction for the election in November. Care to take a guess Word? Just curious how you see it turning out.

Johnson Remains A Bundler For Obama's Presidential Campaign And Has Committed To Raising $100,000 To $200,000. (Obama For America Website, www.barackobama.com, Accessed 5/19/08)

Johnson Earned Large Bonuses At Fannie Mae Due To An Accounting Manipulation:

In 1998, Fannie Mae's Earnings Were Manipulated, Which Resulted In "Maximum Payouts" To Executives Including CEO Jim Johnson. "As CEO of Fannie Mae, Johnson, a former chief of staff to Vice President Walter F. Mondale and chairman of the board of the Kennedy Center, was the beneficiary of accounting in which Fannie Mae's earnings were manipulated so that executives could earn larger bonuses. The accounting manipulation for 1998 resulted in the maximum payouts to Fannie Mae's senior executives -- $1.9 million in Johnson's case -- when the company's performance that year would have otherwise resulted in no bonuses at all, according to reports in 2004 and 2006 by the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight." (Jonathan Weisman and David S. Hilzenrath, "Obama 's Choice Of Insider Draws Fire," The Washington Post, 6/11/08)

The Manipulation Resulted In Johnson Receiving A Bonus Of Over $1.9 Million When He Otherwise Would Not Have Earned A Bonus. "An Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight report in September accused the company of improperly deferring $200 million of estimated expenses in 1998, which allowed management to receive full annual bonuses. Had the expenses been recorded that year, no bonuses would have been paid, the report said. Fannie Mae reported paying bonuses in 1998 to Johnson, who received $1.932 million; Raines, who then was chairman-designate, $1.11 million; Chief Operating Officer Lawrence M. Small, $1.108 million; Vice Chairman Jamie S. Gorelick, a former deputy attorney general, $779,625; Chief Financial Officer J. Timothy Howard, $493,750; and Robert J. Levin, who was executive vice president for housing and community development, $493,750." (Albert B. Crenshaw, "High Pay At Fannie Mae For The Well-Connected," The Washington Post, 12/23/04)

Johnson Also Received Fees And Compensation From Fannie Mae Worth $3.3 Million Between 2001 And 2006. "Johnson left the company before it was swept up in an accounting scandal that tarred its reputation, but even during the years of scandal, Johnson was reaping hundreds of thousands of dollars in consulting fees and other compensation, $3.3 million in all between 2001 and 2006." (Jonathan Weisman and David S. Hilzenrath, "Obama's Choice Of Insider Draws Fire," The Washington Post, 6/11/08)

Fannie Mae Incorrectly Reported Losses That Allowed Johnson To Receive A Large Bonus For The Year:

In 1998, Fannie Mae Improperly Deferred $200 Million Dollars In Expenses, Which Allowed Johnson To Receive Nearly $2 Million In Bonuses; Johnson Would Not Have Received A Bonus If The Money Had Been Properly Expensed. Levin, who was executive vice president for housing an d community development, $493,750." (Albert B. Crenshaw, "High Pay At Fannie Mae For The Well-Connected," The Washington Post, 12/23/04)

Johnson Engineered An Effort To Lobby Politicians So That Fannie Mae Would Not Have To Pay Local Taxes To Washington, D.C.:

While Johnson Was CEO, Fannie Mae Did Not Have To Pay Washington D.C. Taxes Which Cost The City Hundreds Of Millions Per Year. "While Wall Street benefits from Fannie Mae's prosperity, the District government does not. Fannie Mae, the biggest, most profitable company in Washington, is exempt from local income taxes. That exemption costs the cash-strapped D.C. government hundreds of millions of dollars a year." (David A. Vise, "The Financial Giant That's In Our Midst," The Washington Post, 1/15/95)

"If Fannie Mae Were Required To Pay Taxes, It Would Wipe Out The District's Budget Deficit." (David A. Vise, "The Financial Giant That's In Our Midst," The Washington Post, 1/15/95)
Johnson Said That Fannie Mae Was "The Most Powerful Financial Firm In America" And He Urged Employees To Oppose Any New Taxes On The Company. "There is no reason they shouldn't be subject to the tax," said former House District Committee chairman Pete Stark. "It is not fair. They make huge profits," the California Democrat said. The tax break is one of numerous congressionally conferred advantages that Fannie Mae officials preserve through a polished political operation directed by Jim Johnson, the company's chairman and chief executive. In a talk with employees, Johnson described Fannie Mae as 'the most powerful financial firm in America.' He wants Fannie Mae employees to oppose forcefully any ne w effort to tax the company." (David A. Vise, "The Financial Giant That's In Our Midst," The Washington Post, 1/15/95)

Johnson Devised A Strategy To Lobby D.C. Politicians So That Fannie Mae Would Not Have To Pay Local Taxes. "Last summer, D.C. Councilman Bill Lightfoot discovered a simple solution to the District's financial crisis: eliminate a $ 300-million-a-year tax break for the city's most profitable company, Fannie Mae. 'I believe Fannie Mae ought to pay local taxes,' Lightfoot said. 'It practically solves the city's financial crisis in one year. There is no public policy reason to exempt them. It is not fair.' Inside Fannie Mae's sprawling Wisconsin Avenue headquarters, Lightfoot's proposal set off alarms. A team of executives led by chief executive Jim Johnson and Vice Chairman Frank Raines gathered around the firm's 34-foot-long boardroom table to dec ide how to respond. They devised a bold strategy: Use the company's considerable resources and political clout to prevent Lightfoot's proposal from being voted on or publicly debated by council members, whom they feared would support the tax if it got on the agenda. 'The task was to keep it from ever seeing the light of day,' said Frederick D. Cooke Jr., one of the highly regarded lobbyists Fannie Mae hired to quash the proposal. 'What we didn't want to do was have a big public debate about this.'" (David A. Vise, "Fannie Mae Lobbies Hard To Protect Its Tax Break," The Washington Post, 1/16/95)

"In Addition To Enlisting The Lobbying Help Of The Local Charitable Groups It Supported, Fannie Mae Hired A Team Of Top Lobbyists To Persuade D.C. Politicians To Drop The Tax Proposal Without A Vote." (David A. Vise, "Fannie Mae Lobbies Hard To Protect Its Tax Break," The Washington Post, 1/16/95)

In 1998, Johnson Opened A Lobbying Office For Fannie Mae In Oklahoma:

In 1998, Johnson, Then-CEO Of Fannie Mae, Hosted The Opening Ceremony Of A Lobbying Office In Oklahoma. "The concern is whether such efforts were made to bolster Fannie's business more than to advance philanthropic goals. Critics say the foundation helped to reinforce ties with various congressional groups forged by Fannie's in-house lobbyists. At times the two seemed indistinguishable: They often sponsored events in tandem. Both were big donors to the CBCF's annual awards gala in 2003 and a similar black-tie event for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in 2002. In 1998, then-CEO Jim Johnson hosted the opening ceremony of a lobbying and public relations office in Oklahoma, an event attended by former Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating and then-Senator Don Nickles (R-Okla.). But wearing his other hat as the foundation's chairman, Johnson al so took the opportunity to announce $125,000 worth of grants to local charities." (Dawn Kopecki, "Philanthropy, Fannie Mae Style," Business Week, 4/2/07)

Johnson Recruited Current Obama Economic Policy Advisor Former Commerce Secretary William Daley As A Lobbyist For Fannie Mae:

Former Commerce Secretary William Daley Serves As An Obama Advisor For Economic Policy. "At his stop in New Mexico, Obama sought to keep the focus almost exclusively on the economy, appearing with a panel of experts that included William Daley, brother of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and a former U.S. commerce secretary." (John McCormick and Jill Zuckman, "Rivals Spend Day As Frequent Fliers," Chicago Tribune, 2/2/08)

Former Fannie Mae CEO Jim Johnson Recruited Former Sec. Daley As A Lobbyist For Fannie Mae. "Fannie's government relations operations dramatically expanded in the mid-1990s, when then-CEO Johnson recruited Washington A-listers Robert Zoellick, who served in the Reagan and Bush administrations; Lawrence M. Small, former secretary of the Smithsonian Institution; and William M. Daley, commerce secretary in the Clinton administration." (Lisa Lerer, "Fannie, Freddie Spent $200M To Buy Influence," The Politico, 7/16/08)

From 2002 Through 2005, Daley Was A Registered Lobbyist For Fannie Mae. (U.S. Senate Office Of Public Records Website, soprweb.senate.gov, Accessed 7/27/08)

Before Heading Fannie Mae, Johnson Was A Registered Foreign Agent For Lehman Brothers:

In The 1980s, Johnson Worked For Shearson Lehman Brothers. "In the early 1980s Johnson had already started his own Washington consulting company, Public Strategies, with his Carter administration colleague Richard Holbrooke. And now he followed Holbrooke to Wall Street as an investment banker at Shearson Lehman Brothers." (Lloyd Grove, "The Big Chair," The Washington Post, 3/27/98)

OBAMA ADVISOR FRANK RAINES: FORMER FANNIE MAE CEO INVOLVED IN ACCOUNTING SCANDAL

Obama Has Solicited Advice From Former Fannie Mae CEO Franklin Raines Who Was "Under The Shadow Of A $6.3 Billion Accounting Scandal":

The Obama Campaign Has Solicited Franklin Raines, Who "Stepped Down As Fannie Mae's Chief Executive Under The Shadow Of A $6.3 Billion Accounting Scandal," For Advice On Mortgage And Housing Policy. "In the four years since he stepped down as Fannie Mae's chief executive under the shadow of a $6.3 billion accounting scandal, Franklin D. Raines has been quietly constructing a new life for himself. He has shaved eight points off his golf handicap, taken a corner office in Steve Case's D.C. conglomeration of finance, entertainment and health-care companies and more recently, taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters." (Anita Huslin, "On The Outside Now, Watching Fannie Falter," The Washington Post, 7/16/08)

Like Jim Johnson, Raines Received Low-Rate Home Loans From Countrywide, A Major Seller To Fannie Mae. "Fannie Mae's former CEO, Jim Johnson, resigned Wednesday as the leader of likely Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's search for a running mate after The Wall Street Journal reported that he and another former CEO, Franklin Raines, received low-rate home loans from troubled mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp. a major seller of home loans to Fannie Mae." (Alan Zibel, "Fannie Mae CEO Says Ethics Policy Bans Discounts," The Associated Press, 6/12/08)

Former Fannie Mae Chairman Frank Raines Was Accused Of Manipulating The Company's Earnings. "Former Fannie Mae chairman and chief executive Franklin D. Raines, accused of manipulating the housing finance company's earnings, is challenging regulators to make their case against him beginning Feb. 16 instead of waiting until the end of the year." (David S. Hilzenrath, "Fannie Mae's Former Chief Wants Earlier Hearing Date," The Washington Post, 2/6/07)

Raines Was Forced Out As Fannie Mae's CEO In December 2004. "Former chief executive Franklin D. Raines and chief financial officer J. Timothy Howard were forced out Tuesday night after accounting mistakes that could cost Fannie $9 billion in reported profit." (David S. Hilzenrath, "Fannie Mae Exit Packages Face Review," The Washington Post, 12/23/04)

Under Raines' Leadership, Fannie Mae Committed "Extensive Financial Fraud" And Was Forced To Pay A $400 Million Civil Penalty. "In a May report, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight found that Fannie Mae under Raines perpetrated 'extensive financial fraud' so that executives could collect big bonuses. There have been no criminal charges, but the conduct of Raines and other senior Fannie executives 'was inconsistent with the values of responsibility, accountability, and integrity,' the agencies said. Fannie paid a $400 million civil penalty this year to the SEC and OFHEO." (Jay Hancock, Op-Ed, "Raines Claiming Accountability Isn't Enough," The [Baltimore] Sun, 12/10/06)

OBAMA DEMOCRATS BLOCKED REFORM OF FANNIE MAE AND FREDDIE MAC

Sen. John McCain Urged Action Years Ago To Reform Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac:

John McCain Urged Action More Than 2 Years Ago, Co-Sponsoring Legislation To Reform Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac Warning: "If Congress Does Not Act, American Taxpayers Will Continue To Be Exposed To The Enormous Risk That Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac Pose To The Housing Market, The Overall Financial System, And The Economy As A Whole." McCain: "I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. Fannie And Freddie Posed No Risk To Taxpayers, He Said, Adding That 'I Think Wall Street Will Get Over It' If The Two Collapsed." (Editorial, "Fannie Mae's Patron Saint," The Wall Street Journal, 9/10/08)

Dodd Led Efforts To Block Reform Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac:

Obama Joined Sen. Dodd, Sen. Kerry, And Sen. Clinton - All Top Recipients Of Fannie And Freddie Contributions In Actively Opposing Reform Measures And Weakening Existing Regulations. "During this period, Sen. Richard Shelby led a small group of legislators favoring reform, including fellow Republican Sens. John Sununu, Chuck Hagel and Elizabeth Dole. Meanwhile, Dodd -- who along with Democratic Sens. John Kerry, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton were the top four recipients of Fannie and Freddie campaign contributions from 1988 to 2008 -- actively opposed such measures and further weakened existing regulation." (Al Hubbard and Noam Neusner, Op-Ed, "Where Was Sen. Dodd?" The Washington Post, 9/12/08)

Sen. Dodd Called The President's Suggestions For Regulations "Inane" And Recommended The President "Immediately Reconsider His Ill-Advised" Proposals. "As recently as last summer, when housing prices had clearly peaked and the mortgage market had started to seize up, Dodd called on Bush to 'immediately reconsider his ill-advised' reform proposals. Frank, now chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, said that the president's suggestion for a strong, independent regulator of Fannie and Freddie was 'inane.'" (Al Hubbard and Noam Neusner, Op-Ed, "Where Was Sen. Dodd?" The Washington Post, 9/12/08)

Dodd Called On The Regulator For Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac To Lift Portfolio Caps. "Both Schumer and Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., the chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, have called on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac's regulator to lift the portfolio caps. They argue that allowing the two firms to buy more mortgages, at least temporarily, would inject much needed liquidity into the market and calm the financial markets." (Michael R. Crittenden, "Schumer Will Seek To Lift Cap On Mortgage Portfolios Of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac," Congressional Quarterly Today, 8/16/07)

NOTE: Dodd Was The Top Recipient Of Contributions From Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac:

Since 1989, Dodd Has Received At Least $165,400 From Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac: $48,500 From PACs And $116,900 From Individuals, Receiving More Than Any Other Politician. (Lindsay Renick Mayer, "Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac Invest In Lawmakers," Center For Responsive Politics' "Capital Eye" Blog, www.opensecrets.org, 9/11/08)

Schumer Led Efforts To Block Reform Of Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac:

Schumer Called On The Regulator For Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac To Lift Portfolio Caps.

Rep. Frank And Sens. Schumer And Dodd Protected Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac. "The powerhouse Democratic overseers of the banking committees -- Rep. Barney Frank, Sen. Christopher Dodd and Sen. Chuck Schumer -- protected Fannie and Freddie." (Robert Novak, Op-Ed, "Crony Image Dogs Paulson's Rescue Effort," Chicago Sun-Times, 7/17/08)

After The Subprime Housing Crisis Began, Schumer Advocated Raising The Cap On What Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac Could Lend. "Even last September, as the subprime housing crisis began to metastasize and the market was expressing concerns about the pair, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), the powerful chair of the Senate banking subcommittee on housing, had the very bad (and ultimately rejected) idea of raising the cap on what Fannie and Freddie could lend by 10 percent. Since then the companies have reported losses of $11 billion, and there's uncertainty about just how much more damage there will be from future defaults." (Editorial, "We Can't Say No, But We Can Regulate Them," [New York] Newsday, 7/20/08)

Despite Reports Of Fraudulent Accounting, Schumer Opposed Creating A Strong Regulator For Fannie Mae And Freddie Mac In 2004. "Even after Freddie Mac was shown to have manipulated earnings, Congress remained deadlocked over legislation to create a stronger regulator. Opposing one such bill in 2004, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) argued that a hostile regulator could use the proposed powers to choke the companies." (David S. Hilzenrath, "Fannie, Freddie Deflected Risk Warnings," The Washington Post, 7/14/08)

What an utter waste of time and space. I would venture to say that no one is actually going to read Judy's entire post.

I could post up dozens of headlines that show McCain is ignorant of economic facts and a strong proponent of deregulation.

It is truly amazing, he has been rabidly for deregulation for 25 years, and in the last 48 hours he has seemed to become re-born and now is a strong proponent of regulation.

It is the ultimate flip-flop and his new position is an utter joke.

McCain has not had a conversion, he had the foresight to predict the bank problems, but he could not get the necessary legislation passed.

Here is a link to the PDF of his speech in 2006 archived at the Library of Congress.

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getpage.cgi?position=page&page=S5217&dbname=2006_record

John McCain's foresight proves that Obama isn't "with it"

Quote below:
John McCain 2006 to Congress.

" For years I have been concerned
about the regulatory structure that
governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—
known as Government-sponsored entities
or GSEs—and the sheer magnitude
of these companies and the role they
play in the housing market. OFHEO’s
report this week does nothing to ease
these concerns. In fact, the report does
quite the contrary. OFHEO’s report solidifies
my view that the GSEs need to
be reformed without delay.
I join as a cosponsor of the Federal
Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform
Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my
support for quick passage of GSE regulatory
reform legislation. If Congress
does not act, American taxpayers will
continue to be exposed to the enormous
risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
pose to the housing market, the overall
financial system, and the economy as a
whole"

You do realize that Fannie and Freddie are not the only problems?

I'm sorry but John McCain has been a fervent promoter of de-regulation for over 25 years. If you do not accept that then you don't know John McCain.

Frankly, in the last week he has made an utter fool out of himself. First the fundamentals of the economy were strong. Then, as the financial industry was collapsing on that very same day, he called for a commission to look into the problems. Then he immediately reversed course again and pushed for strong action in the way of heavy regulation. This of course comes after a career of deregulation. Yesterday he claimed he would fire SEC Chairman Chris Cox if he were President. Aside from it being illegal for the President to fire an SEC Chairman, what the Hell is that supposed to do? He would create even more uncertainty with a rash decision like that. So he would fire the SEC chairman 4 months before his term is up, he would nominate someone new who would have to be confirmed by the Senate. That is just ludicrous.

The guy should just be quiet. For people who actually understand economic issues, he makes himself look more and more foolish every day.

Look let us keep this simple. McCain is a great deal more knowledgeable than his critics would suggest, even in matters of economy. However, more importantly, John McCain is a great believer in his country; a true and devoted patriot who is passionate about what he does and it shows from top to bottom - this passion will ensure he makes a fine President.

Fact is, one does not have to possess specialized knowledge in each area of governance to be a great leader. Apart from passion, the other essential factor is organization and commitment; who would argue that McCain lacks either.

The late great Henry Ford was at one stage accused of being ignorant by a Chicago newspaper resulting in a suit against the publishers. When Mr. Ford took the witness stand, lawyers for the publisher tried in vain to prove to the jury that Ford was actually ignorant and failed. Ford’s replies were revealing. While I am unable to locate his exact riposte, in effect what he said was unambiguous. Any person, if organized and clear about his/her purpose can address any question, issue, or matter of business (or government) to which he/she is devoting their efforts. Ford surrounded himself with all the knowledge required to forge a great and enduring automobile empire. Accordingly, McCain whom incidentally, appears to be one of the most passionate American politicians since Reagan, will unquestionably, solicit for, and hence command, all the knowledge he needs through sheer commitment and loyalty to his country.

Implicit in your post is that Obama and people who believe in Obama do not love this country. I don't question McCain's patriotism or his followers' patriotism - yet you so easily dismiss half the nation.

I do not believe most people understand the full danger that the whole deregulatory, deficit spending, trickle down economics nonsense has created for this country.

The policies of the Bush administration have created record deficits that have been funded by foreign investors. Today, foreigners hold nearly $3 trillion in U.S. national debt. When Bush took office it was about $1.1 trillion. McCain professes to love Bush's economic programs and has repeatedly said the fundamentals of the economy are strong over the last year.

Ken, has repeatedly claimed that Obama and Dems would lead this country down the path of socialism. IT IS TOO LATE - WE HAVE ALREADY BECOME A SOCIALIST NATION. Bush's Treasury Secretary nationalized the mortgage industry with the seizure of Fannie and Freddie. He nationalized AIG. And, he is nationalizing the financial industry.

Obama's economic advisors include Warren Buffett, Robert Rubin, and Larry Summers. I trust them over the clowns who pushed for deficits, allowed foreign investors to take control of U.S. debt, and now are nationalizing everything to save our financial systems from collapse. McCain is one of those who fully supported Bush and allowed this to happen.

The price tag is out for Bush's proposal to buy up bad mortgages and nationalizing the mortgage industry - $700 billion.

My wife and I play by the rules. We put down 20 percent on our home when we bought it, did not overbuy, and continue to live within our means. Yet, now, the Bush bailouts are going to put us and our kids, and our grandkids on the hook for $700 billion in worthless mortgages that were issued by banks to unqualified folks.

Amazingly, the reason for the bailouts is so that the banks and financial firms can continue to issue out even more credit.

Look folks, you cannot borrow your way out of debt. That is exactly what is happening. We will add this $700 billion to our national debt, borrow money from the Chinese to finance the debt, and then our banks (which are increasingly being taken over by foreigners) can issue out even more credit.

The country is being sold right out from under our feet as a result of Bush's economic policies and his current efforts to have the government take over the financial system.

A piece from the NY Times in 1999 provides insight into the when and why of the current global financial rot:

" ... Fannie Mae, the nation’s biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits ... "

Thanks for the link, you would agree that the problem is far, far, far larger than Fannie, wouldn't you?

Do you have any idea what the national debt of the U.S. was when Bush took office? Do you know what it is now? Let's start with that if you really want to discuss the problems facing the U.S.

Even if Rihanna naked seems to have a bit of a stutter (ella, ella, eh eh eh) who wouldn't want to stand with her under her umbrella? Rihanna brought a little Caribbean heat to the summer of 2005 with the smash hit "Pon de Replay." She instantly caught the attention of the likes of Jay-Z and Sean Paul, and in 2007, when she released her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad, and that stunning sex tape rihanna did in the bedroom with her then boyfriend, Chris Brown. All signs indicated she would be a massive success. Her fourth studio album was released in November 2009, entitled Rated R, and it is Rihanna's pictures highest selling debut in the U.S. yet.

He asked Rihanna to perform whatever song that came to mind for her. Rogers was obviously suprised on what great talent Rihanna had. Immediately, both Rogers and Rihanna made demos containing close to twelve tracks including the 2005 smash hit Pon De Replay and mailed the demos out to various recording comanies including Def Jam Recordings where Rihanna would eventually be signed onto.
