JOHN MCCAIN AND SARAH PALIN IN 2008
The Republican National Convention ended last night with the acceptance speech for the GOP nomination of Senator John McCain. McCain hit a bipartisan cord in his speech including stating that the GOP lost the 2006 election because, "we lost our way." Refering to the excessive spending in Congress while the GOP was in the majority.
McCain has never been a rousing speaker unlike Sarah Palin who brought the house down on Wednesday night. But McCain hit a cord with the Convention and the American people as he very personally described the transformation that took place within his life during the agonizing years he spent as a POW in Vietnam.
McCain said the he went into the military as a cocky self centered man and returned after nearly five and half years of imprisonment as a man who put country first and had fallen, "in love," with The United States.
McCain also adopted the mantra of real change that he and Palin offer the country. Change that comes from real experience and real ideas.
McCain made some very distinct contrasts between he and Democrat nominee Barack Obama which highlighted Obama's lack of experience, his proposals of massive programs that will increase the size of government and his paying for those increases by large tax increases. As well as inexperience to lead in a dangerous world as opposed to McCain's experience with woorld leaders and hands on experience in dealing with foreign policy.
McCain identified with Americans who are daily trying to pay bills, raise children, pay for gas and make the mortgage payments.
Many have complained about the powerful and exciting speech that was delivered by Sarah Palin on Wednesday night as a partisan attack job by the Vice Presidential nominee.
That is precisly what the speech was supposed to be in many respects. Palin introduced herself in a fashion that was exciting and well recieves by the Convention and most Americans. But her job was to do exactley what she did, unite the base behind John McCain and the ticket.
Now McCain has the ability with a united GOP to go after Independents and internals of polls are showing that it is already beginning to work. Rasmussen is showing that 9% of Independants who had not made up their mind on who they will be voting for are now voting for McCain/Palin over Obama/Biden.
The very liberal CBS poll that was released on the final day of the Convention has the race a tie while others show that into the final day the ,"Obama bounce," was fading guickly.
Today the race begins in earnest as the final push for November starts. McCain and Palin left the Convention Center and boarded a plane headed for Wisconsin a key swing State where the GOP ticket will campaign today.
The McCain speech preceded by the highly touted Palin introduction on day three of the Convention sends the GOP ticket out with a united party and VP pick who still has the country buzzing. They hit the campaign trail with a strong ticket and message for victory in 2008.

McCain gave a truly odd speech. I think anyone listening to his personal story found it moving.
But, he called for bi-partisanship after the red meat speeches throughout the convention.
He also basically said, Republicans botched it by compromising their principles, and now Americans should trust them to solve the problem.
Palin certainly energized the Republican base and it led to $1 million in donations. But Obama raised $10 million within 24 hours of the speech. Money talks.
Rob, your dollar figures are wrong. The McCain campaign raised an additional 10 million while the GOP raised and similar amount.
Also part of the idea with the Palin pick was to unite the base in a way that would allow McCain to be more bipartisan. And like I mention in post it seems to be working as the internals of Rasmussen show a 9% gain with independants for McCain.
No Ken, I am just speaking about the 24 hours after her speech. Republican donors have given a total of $10 million since Palin was announced last week, but Obama raised that just in the 24 hours after her speech.

Rob, also if you want to get into the money issue again, first, Obama is not recieving public funds which means his , "donars, ' have no ceiling.
Also the Mccain camp recieved an 85 million dollar check from publi finds last night which is not in the equation.
Also in the last two Presidential elections the Dems have out spent the GOP by more than 100 million dollars and still have not won the White House. Obama has out spent McCain by a huge amount and he still can't manage more than a tie when all of the dust has settled.
GOP donars will be adding to the pot for McCain now that the convention is over but as history has shown dollars don't buy a Presidential election .
Ken, by your response it appears to me that you don't understand McCain's campaign finance law.
McCain accepted public financing. This means that he gets $84 million in taxpayer money that he can use for his campaign now that his convention is over and he has been formally nominated. By law, he took the money and agreed that he and his campaign will no longer raise money.
By turning down the $84 million in taxpayer money, Obama is not constrained. However, individual donors cannot give more than $2300 to his campaign. That is true whether he took the taxpayer money or not.
Obama turned down public financing by choice. McCain could have done the same but realized that he doesn't have the support base of Obama and obvoiusly believed he could not raise more than $84 million before the election anyway. If he did, he would have turned down the taxpayer funds.
The amazing thing about what Obama is doing is he is raising money through small individual donations - not the big PACs and rich fat cat donors who bundle money up for the Republicans.
Also, you are just flat out wrong about the past elections. Bush spent tens of millions more than both Kerry and Gore.
Google it and read the thousands of articles and official election reports that show that I am right. Bush outspent Gore 2-1 in 2000 and outspent him 4-1 on lawyers watching/fighting the recount in Florida. In 2004 the money race was closer, but Bush spent tens of millions of dollars more than Kerry - even including "independent" 527 money.
Thanks to Palin and the constant attacks on Obama during the convention, Obama is going to end up raising far, far more than $84 million from the millions of small donors who support him.

I also understand that by not accepting public money Obama has a cap on each donation but the soft money that was the target of campaign finance and using public funds is what I was referring to a not having a ceiling
Ken, again you appear to be misinformed. Soft money is not covered by any campaign finance laws. There has never been a ceilig on that. Soft money donations to 527s will help both Obama and McCain. That money has nothing to do with whether a candidate opts in or out of public financing.
I am guessing that Obama is going to clear about $60+ million for August. Then, he is going to raise another $150 million in September and October.
There is gong to be plenty of third party, 527 money that supports the candidates. I can also guarantee you that Republican 527s will outspend Dem 527s by at least 2-1 (that is what happened in 2004). All the oil money, big pharma, big insurance, tobacco, etc. money that has bought the Republican Party will see to that.
I'm curious Ken, where do you get your $200M figure from? By law, McCain can only spend the $84 million in public financing figure.
Again, by law any excess funds that he had in the bank had to be transferred to the RNC. He raise about $50M, but I am sure he spent heavily in August also and probably was left with around $10M-$20M tops - that money had to be transferred.
The only money that McCain can now spend and actually control himself is the $84M.

As usual, Mike is completely uninformed. I said that within 24 hours of Palin's speech Obama raised $10M (I gave a link).
Mike, if you are suggesting that McCain raised $10M within 48 hours of her speech then you are also saying that McCain is breaking campaign finance laws. The minute that McCain officially accepted the nomination he could no longer raise money for his campaign, by law. He took the $84M in public taxpayer money - the condition of taking the taxpayer money to fund his campaign is that HE CANNOT RAISE ANY MORE MONEY FOR HIS CAMPAIGN.
So, either you are dead wrong, or you are saying McCain broke the law. I'm betting in the former.
I’d be terrified to have Sarah Palin in charge. Someone who goes to 6 different colleges in 6 years does not have the follow-through to be the leader of the free world. It will take a lot more than charm and down-home talking to go toe-to-toe against Vladimir Putin.
The Bible says that a man shall be judged by his leadership in the home, and I’m not at all sure about Sarah Palin’s leadership in her own home. I don’t want her in charge of the country.
