MCCAIN PICKS ALASKA GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN
John McCain has shocked the political world and caught all of the pundits off guard by calling on Alaska Governor Sarah Plain to join the Republican ticket for the 2008 Presidential race.Most believed that McCain would choose Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney or Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty but both early were found to have engagements in location other than Dayton, Ohio where McCain was to make his announcement.
By choosing Palin, McCain not only satisfies the GOP Conservative base but give the Democrats little to attack especially because Palin is a women.
The first term Alaskan Governor is a staunch conservative who is pro - life, a hunter and NRA member, a reform Governor who is well liked in Alaska favors drilling especially in ANWR and ran on a no corruption platform in a State whose government had been plagued by corruption.
Additionally as a Governor and a former Mayor, of the four candidates who are in the mix for 2008, Palin is the only one with elected Executive experience. She is a mother of five and cares for one child with Downs Syndrome.
Democrats have little to attack Palin with. Though a first term Governor, they cannot attack her on inexperience without opening themselves up for attacks on the inexperience problems of Barack Obama. Being a women the party that claims to be for women would be hard pressed to attack a women VP. Though she has no foreign policy experience that does not even come into play as foreign policy is one of McCain's strong points therefore his running mate does not need the experience.
A brilliant pick by John McCain that not only took the wind out of the Obama speech on the last night of the DNC Convention but also may very well have picked up the disgruntled Hillary supporters who wanted a women in the White House. This choice by McCain may have put the icing on the cake for a McCain Presidency and a victory in November!

Ken, I have no idea who Palin really is. She is now going to have to go from remote Alaska to the daily grind of national campaign. She may end up being great, but I cannot imagine that she and her family are used to the political attacks and press scrutiny that she will inevitably face.
I heard her talk about how she is a hockey mom and how she joined the PTA. Certainly those are admirable traits, but they seemed odd in a speech by the person who wants to be one step away from the presidency.
I have to say, taking experience off of the table is a bit odd. That has been the crux of McCain's argument against Obama. Now it appears that he doesn't think it is all that important.
What this pick tells me is that McCain panicked and he recognized that he was going to lose if he didn't shake things up.
In about a week, we are going to know a whole lot more about Palin and then it will be easier to judge the wisdom of picking her.
By the way, it looks like Obama got at least an 8 point bump from his convention. We'll see what it is on Monday as the RNC convention starts up. However, if that holds it would be a pretty solid jump.
actually rob i think you only have it partially right. it shows continued self centeredness and arrogance. mccain doesn't want someone who can challenge him or be his equal. like bush and cheney and most other republicans they think they do not need other opinion than their own. this was nothing more than political maneouvering. mccain has no respect for women or he would have chosen a woman who had "earned" national respect and admiration (Kay Bailey Hutchenson) but, egads any of those heavy hitter republican women are Pro-Choice. How do you pander to women and christian fundamentalists at the same time?
i have an interesting observation in the contrast between the two VP introductions. at the first introduction of Biden by Obama you could see Obama sitting in the background calm and cool and completely trusting that his choice for VP could hold his own. in contrast the creepy smiling specter of McCain was hovering over the shoulder of his new VP pick (literally) as she gave her speech and she was constantly looking over to him as if subtley and tacitly for his approval (i counted about 15 times). it served to remind me that here would be a president with, no offense intended, one foot in the grave and in his infinite "wisdom", "judgement" and "experience" he was giving us sarah palin as the commander in chief in wating. wow. what a completely clueless old geezer.
I am chuckling because I my wife and I both happened to be home today and watched Palin being announced. Both of us thought it was odd how McCain stood behind her. He really should have stepped back away and let Palin have the moment.
Her personal story is interesting, but it appears that she has no national/international experience and limited experience in Alaska. That said, I think she may be able to resonate with some women, but I think it is just as likely that she will fold under the inevitable political attacks and scrutiny that she has never faced before.
rob...The only reason you think she might fold under the scrutiny is because she is a women. Did anyone worry about that with Saint Obama? It is so ridiculous that people have the nerve to bring up her lack of foreign policy experience when Obama has none...and he is running for President. So if (God forbid) something happens to McCain we will have a VP that has just as much experience as the current democratic PRESIDENTIAL candidate. Wake up and realize when you are contradicting yourself.
I am a life-long Alaskan and a resident of the City of Wasilla (where Palin was Mayor). I have to say that there is one thing about her nomination that makes me unhappy - the fact that we will lose her gutsy, courageous, ethical, and open leadership of our state.
Alaska sits on the Arctic Circle and few realize that Alaska is an international trade hub. Cargo passes through Alaska from Asia, Russia, and Europe because it's just a quick hop over the pole compared to other routes. Shouldn't have to say it, but the leaders and residents of our "little" state are not ignorant of the big world beyond our borders.
Alaska has also been heavily involved in international trade since our oil reserves were developed by big international oil companies. You think dealing with other countries is challenging? Try dealing with international oil giants who routinely threaten a small state with massive job losses to avoid regulation or taxation (not to mention they bribe our politicians).
I don't think of Sarah Palin as a politician... she is a real live person who knows my family, remembered us after she "made it big" as governor, and is a stateswoman who leads according to what is right, whether or not it's popular. She's our Governor, but she is also real and approachable.
Alaskans will be very upset to lose such an open, honest stateswoman who has opposed corruption (even the kind that benefits us as a state) and tackled the oil companies head on; respecting their right to run a profitable business while defending Alaska's right to pay for schools and other state expenses from oil revenue. Oil is our number one industry, but that doesn't mean we have to roll over everytime an oil company wants to increase their profit margin.
Dang it McCain! You're taking the best leader Alaska has had in a very long time!

Oh please, don't accuse me of being against women. Unlike John McCain I support equal pay for women. That is a complete joke.
If she was a man I would say exactly the same thing. Running a campaign in Alaska is nothing like running for national office. The level of scrutiny and the political attacks will be like nothing she has ever seen.
If she holds up, good for her. She has never campaigned for national office and there is nothing in her experience or educational achievement that I know of that makes me believe that she is prepared to go through the rigors of such a campaign.
The fact that she remembers your family after she "made it big" is great for you. But, she has to prove to the 130 million Americans who vote that she could be president. This isn't sparsely populated Alaska. She isn't going to be able to just meet every one of them.
Frankly, the hypocrisy comes from McCain. For the better part of this year he has been saying that Obama doesn't have the experience and isn't qualified to be CIC. Then he picks Palin. What a joke. He undercut his storyline of the last year.
It is a pure political gimmick because McCain was desperate. He panicked because he believes he will lose.

Palin is a real person, not some media created freak show like the Obama Biden ticket.
And I couldn't be more pleased that Democrats are attacking her for her lack of experience. She may be just a "heartbeat" away from the presidency but she has MORE experience than the community organizer the Dems just nominated to be at the top of their ticket.
As for "panicking" I suggest it's Rob and his ilk that are doing just that. Say goodbye to Obama's one day convention bounce and say hello to a brand new election with the conservative base fully energized and on board and ready to roar!

It hasn't been 24 hours and already the fact that she botched a super-expensive and completely unnecessary sports complex deal in Wasilla has come out. Turns out that she wasn't the fiscal steward she has been portrayed as. She left Wasilla $20 million in debt - an astounding number for a village of less than 7000 people.
It also turns out that she was actually FOR the "bridge to nowhere" and has only recently flip flopped to say she was actually against it.
Last month she claimed she was for Obama's energy plan.
Less than 30 days ago she said she didn't know what the VP's responsibilities were and didn't want to be considered.
She is for gay rights.
Her "troopergate" problem is ongoing and the decision by the bi-partisan review board is due the week before the election.
By Wednesday night when she gives her speech, who knows what new information will be out.
Look, she may be great, but it certainly looks like McCain just flipped a coin or pulled her name out of a hat.
The stories just keep coming. It appears that Sarah Palin's water broke while she was at an energy conference in Texas just a month before her baby was due. She didn't go to the hospital. She gave her 30 minute speech and then flew - on a commercial Alaska Air flight - many hours back to Alaska to give birth to her most recent son.
She says she consulted her doctor, but her doctor said she did not ask for medical clearance to fly. Obviously no sane doctor would approve such a flight. Reckless behavior at the very least.
Nice to see she was so concerned for the life of her unborn son. Nice family values! Others can make their own decision.

When my son was born the wter broke and the doctor told us not to even worry about going to the hospital until about six to seven hours AFTER.

Once a woman's water breaks they are on the way to delivery. It is also a fact that the risk of infection rises after the water breaks. That is why doctors tell you to immediately get to the hospital.
People can draw their own conclusions about what Palin did (give a speech and then fly from Dallas back to Alaska, AFTER her water broke), but in my opinion her decisions showed a reckless disregard for her unborn child.

And yes, doctors do sometimes give individual patients different advice than they would ever put on web page addressed to the general public. I'm surprised that Rob doesn't realize that.
