SARAH PALIN AND BRISTOL , MOTHER AND DAUGHTER
I had not initially intended to post concerning the news that came to light on Labor Day concerning the pregnancy of Governor Sarah Palin's daughter Bristol. This situation is a family matter and concerns the child of a politician which should by all accounts make it a non-issue and off limits.
But the left in hypocritical media frenzy is not only trying to make it an issue but dragging Bristol Palin through the mud in the process and claiming that her mother is the one doing the dragging. First to the media and the left wing who think this is a story that gives them fuel for their nasty political fodder, I say if you think dragging a child through the mud is wrong then how about NOT DOING IT!
In an attempt to try and attack the McCain/Palin ticket the media and many on the left have chosen to reach into the lowest gutter and use a child to try and get to the mother. I have never found one issue that I could find any agreement with Barack Obama, but I do have to agree and actually commend him on his response upon hearing about Bristol Palin.
Obama not only stated that it was a non-issue, but he stood fast on his prior statements that family was off limits, the only consistent policy that Obama has had in the campaign other than raising taxes. He also stated that if any member of his campaign talked about it they would be fired. Yet those who support him on the left and in the media could care less about the reaction by their candidate.
One has to wonder, considering the position many on the left have on the unborn issue, if some of their self righteous indignation concerning Bristol's pregnancy is because they are upset that she chose not to abort the baby.
Everyday families throughout this Nation find a similar situation to that of the Palin family in their own households. Sarah Palin and her family are an example of an American family that has problems as well as success. The pregnancy of her daughter is personal and even though the Governor is in the spotlight because of her addition to the GOP ticket, there is no excuse for the frenzy by the left and the media in placing her daughter in that spotlight.
This does not diminish or affect Palin's ability to be Vice President nor should it affect or hinder the process of the election except as a goal by the left to dig at anything that will make someone they do not like look bad. Palin's stance on moral issues have not changed and as with any parent, children make mistakes and cannot be watched 24/7.
The important result is that Bristol Plain has chosen the right path by keeping the baby and marrying the father to give her baby the best chance for a loving and normal life. Sarah Palin and her husband I am sure will be devoted and loving grandparents as they are parents.
I have to wonder if this had happened to Chelsea Clinton when she was a teenager if the response by the left and the media would have been that same. While the Clinton's were in the White House going after their then teenage daughter was considered off limits and rightfully so. Yet now because Sarah Palin is a Republican and frankly I also believe because she is a women the same liberals and media who considered Chelsea off limits now consider this private family matter headline news.
This will ultimately backlash on the left and the media. In fact the majority of Americans will now see Sarah Palin more like the average American mom and one politician that they can identify with because they understand the family issues that the Palin's are facing. In the long run the people of this Nation will side with Sarah and her family and once again add to their disgust of the media and many on the left.

It didn't happen to Chelsea Clinton - so speculating about it is ridiculous. It happened to the daughter of a governor who is being held up as a champion of family values and who promotes abstinence-only policies. Whether you like it or not, it provides further support to the fact that abstinence-only programs don't work.
Frankly, her daughter's pregnancy doesn't make much difference to me personally, and I do feel bad for her daughter, but politics in this country is a blood sport. That is just the way it is. In a day or two people will move on from the issue.
I think her bigger problem is going to be the "troopergate" issue. The revelation that came out yesterday that she has hired a lawyer raises questions.
Her fiscal record in Wasilla is horrible and it is now clear that she actually supported the "Bridge to Nowhere."
The latest revelation today is that she was an active member of the fringe Alaskan Independence Party a decade ago. She wanted Alaska to secede from the union. So much for loving America and being such a patriot.
Rob, the point about Chelsea was that she was off limits and rightfully so and so should Sarah Palin's kids.

BTW, the doctors who advised us to wait six hours after the water broke when my son was born did so in order to allow his mother to relax and not have to suffer through the long agonizong wait in a delivery room for a baby that was born 14 hours after her water broke.
My son was not only born very healthy but his mom had a reletivly easy labor because she was relaxed and not uptight after waiting in a cold room until time.
This is in response to your accusation that her doctors were neglegent in thier actions and advice when my son was born.
Additionally Sarah Palin's son was already known to be a very special needs child and I can fully understand that as a mother she waould want the doctors that had been with her throughout the pregnancy!
Going after Palin through her daughter and through her pregnancy is inexcusable regardles of what office she is running for~!

Ken, I actually read a commenter on a Reuter's article say that she couldn't figure out why Sarah's daughter didn't just have an abortion, so your analysis is right on! Geez, these people are insane!
The fact is that it is the left who has made sex a non-issue and pushed it off as just fine and dandy in our public schools, and now they have the audacity to holler and scream because Sarah has a daughter who is pregnant out of wedlock? Talk about hypocrisy. It just shows how scared they are. Sarah's daughter isn't running for anything. Good and decent people will realize that Sarah is doing the right thing by standing by her daughter, and that the daughter and the father of this baby are doing the right thing by getting married and raising this child together.
Like you wrote, even Obama himself said this has nothing to do with the election and people's children should be off limits. But I hope the left continues doing this because it shows them up for the hypocrites they truly are and makes them look mean and nasty, as the ones doing this truly are. Sarah and her family can handle it, and they will do so with grace and good will. They are so far above the moonbats there just isn't any comparison.

Ken, she attended AIP meetings and at a minimum it is clear that she is sympathetic to their platform. In fact, her husband was an officially registered member of the party.
I have no problem with Palin being a woman - I have a problem with her ideas, decisions, and actions. Calling me a sexist doesn't change the fact that she is under investigation for troopergate, that she lied and was actually for the "Bridge to Nowhere," that she ran Wasilla into the ground financially, that she appears to hold secessionist views (at the very least she has been sympathetic to that view), and that she demonstrated reckless behavior with her choice to give a speech and board an 11-hour commercial flight to return to Alaska after having her water break.
At a time when McCain should be talking about issues and his experience, he is fighting the Palin fires that keep popping up. It is pretty clear they didn't vet her properly.

I can understand both sides of this because my family has gone through it. I have several nieces that were in their teens when they got pregnant. Unfortunately, it seems that it's almost becoming the norm in the American family. So on one hand, I think that it should have been a private, family issue. On the other hand, we're NOT talking about a normal family.This is the family of the Gov of AK who preaches abstinence and not sex ed! I'm guessing that only the first ANON comment was directed at me. Let me address your point and your question directly.
1. I am a parent, and my wife and I have made choices that allow one of us to virtually be at home with our 2 kids every moment that they are home. If we are not home, we make sure that they have a grandparent home.
2. Any errors in judgement that my children make reflect poorly on me and my wife. If they fail, it is our failure.
To take that further, the choices I have made are based on the upbringing and lessons I learned from my parents. I was (and continue to be) cognizant of family respect and personal responsibility. I have never used drugs, never been arrested, I didn't knock up my girlfriend in high school, etc. I cannot think of one mistake that I have hever made that could have been a life changing or even potentially life changing mistake.
"Family values" is not a marketing slogan or a meaningless saying in my household - we actually live it.

lista - so your position is that Palin is being questioned because she is a woman? If you are suggesting that a different standard should apply to her than all other candidates because she is a woman, then you are the sexist.
I can speak for myself - I have made it a priority in my life to make sure that I spend a lot of time with my two elementary-school kids. My wife and I have both made sacrifices in our professional life to do so. We literally turn down job offers and consulting assignments that could bring us more money or which offer us more power.
If my wife and I had a newborn with Down Syndrome and a pregnant daughter who we also needed to plan a wedding for, we certainly would make a different decision than Palin and her husband.
However, even if the kids are well cared for, the big reason that Palin is being criticized is that she wants to impose her "values" that include abstinence only education rather than a scientifically based sex ed policy. If it didn't work for the Palin family, why should the rest of us have to deal with it?

It almost sounds as if you think that no politician should ever be elected that has kids. Do you really believe that?
The Abstinence only issue is only one of the issues that she believes in, though if you are a democrat and disagree with a lot of her Republican ideas, that doesn't surprise me. Fortunately, there are a lot of Republicans who do agree with what she stands for.
I think both Palins have some challenges to deal with in their home. If Todd Palin was running, I would say he should consider dealing with his domestic issues - just as I think Sarah should do.
I have no problem with politicians having kids. But, if you have a politician whose home life appears to be suspect, it seems odd to me why you would expect them to be accepted as a good example of family values and a reasonable advocate for family values policies.
If abstinence-only clearly didn't work for her daughter, why should Americans who disagree be expected to sit by and just accept an abstinence-only candidate for the nation?
I get it, you agree with her making the decision to leave the care of her newborn Down Syndrome son to others (that has to happen if Sarah is actually going to work as the VP), and you have no real issue with her teenage daughter's underage drinking and her pregnancy. For many folks (including many Republicans that I know), they find this candidate to be a poor example of family values, not to mention the fiscal question marks, her book banning efforts (that is the latest news today), or her problems with troopergate.

In regard to children...if you push "Abstinance Only - Sex Education" on your state and your child ends up a pregnant teen, that is incredibly relevant.
If you tout your son's enlistment but want everyone to ignore your other children's troubles, then that is hypocracy.
If, when you have a down syndrome newborn and a pregnant teen, decide to commit to the time consuming prospect of running our nation instead of being available to your children, father or mother, that is selfish! Nothing sexist about it. None of the other candidates children are special needs. None sought the presidency under such conditions.

Talk about a hypocritical bunch. First off- how many of these news media anchors/ reporters live their job 24/7 and still have families? Seems to me a mainstream anchor is quite a busy person. How can they do that and be 'good parents'?
And what is the big deal with 17 and pregnant? Is it because she is pregnant? Or because she had pre-marital sex? Seems to be getting pregnant is just gettin your hand caught in the cookie jar- everyone knows what you've been doing.
And in today's society, what is the percentage rate of teenage sex? Schools are giving 6th grade girls pills to prevent cervical cancer caused by engaging in sex too early in life or by having too many different partners- so kids are being told its ok if they decide to have sex, they just can't get pregnant.
Very hypocritical if you ask me- and for the record, my parents brought me up with strong family values but I still ended up pregnant at 19- that was my fault, not theirs.

There is no such thing as a working mom who does not leave her children to the care of others while at work. Most of Palin's kids are old enough to help look after the baby. At the RNC, the baby did not appear at all to be lacking in love.
Also, her pregnant daughter is marrying the baby's father, so I think you guys have blown this thing way out of porportion.
