IMMIGRATION CRACKDOWN SOUTH CAROLINA STYLE

One year ago South Carolina Republican Governor Mark Sanford, during an election year, was asked if the state could do anything about illegal immigration on the State level. To this Sanford replied that immigration was a, "federal issue."

Since then the outcry in the State has been so strong that the Governor has introduced to the South Carolina State Legislature a tough immigration bill that is due to pass this week. An immigration bill that takes tough stances against illegal aliens. The bill calls for changes in the law that make it a felony to harbor or transport illegals, bars any Government Contractor from hiring illegals and prevents them from gaining contracts or losing them if illegals are found in their employ. Under the bill business' who hire illegals will be fined heavily and forced to pay back payroll taxes for any illegals who have been in their employ.

Because of the large influx of new residents from many of the Northeastern States South Carolina is experiencing a new housing boom and service industry jobs like landscapers and building contractors are reaping the benefits. A large population of illegals has invaded the State looking for employment and companies have been all to willing to hire the cheap labor.

The new bill will help to curtail much of this problem. The bill also comes during the controversy over the Federal Senate Immigration Bill and the feud between South Carolina's two Senators. Senator Jim DeMint who adamantly opposes the federal legislation and Senator Lindsay Graham who is a vocal and staunch supporter of the US Senate bill.

At the recent GOP State Convention Senator Graham was booed off the stage as he tried to defend the federal immigration legislation, while Senator DeMint was cheered for his opposition to the bill and his statement that it was blanket amnesty for the 12 million illegal aliens in The United States.

South Carolina with the passage of this strong State immigration bill will join a growing number of States who are getting tough on the illegal alien problem and bypassing the weakness on the federal level. The legsialation also proves that when the voice of the people steps foward elected officials will listen. We still have time to make our voice heard against the Senate Amnesty Bill.

Actually, this fits inline with that belief nicely. We believe that it is the States who must enforce the laws. We believe that a great many issues should be left in the hands of the States and only superceded by the Federal Government where absolutely necessary.

Oklahoma is doing quite well on the Immigration front that's for sure

Here's a snip

Henry signs immigration bill

Gov. Brad Henry signed House Bill 1804 today, putting into law one of the country's toughest and most sweeping immigration reform bills.

The bill will set criminal penalties for knowingly and willingly harboring illegal immigrants. No public benefits will be allowed to people who are in the state illegally, except in cases of medical emergencies or emergency aid. Businesses will need to run all workers through a federal verification system or risk penalties and legal action.

And Brad Henry is a Democrat!

That was a shock :-)

Well, MOST conservatives, liberals and moderates...

There are those who have wholly lost their way and lost sight of the danger this presents.

Yeah, but who gets to decide "when necessary." Or what's necessary. Certainly not you, when it comes to me.

Actually yes mudkitty. I have a say when it comes to you and you have a say when it comes to me. That is what a majority rule is all about. If the majority votes something into law then the whole is subjected to that law. So if we live in the same state we do have a say in what happens to each other.

So vote how you wish and if there are enough individuals of like mind, then you might get your way.

We all have a vote. You needn't state the obvious, CCC, unless you need to remind yourself. But you don't get to vote on my values or on my religion...

In this country we have freedom of religion, and I don't have to practice yours, and you can't legislate or vote that into law, because it's unconstitutional. Get it? That's the point. You're right to swing your arm ends with my nose.

As it relates to the immigration issue, your scapegoating of immigrants (especially American immigrants) regardless of how they come here (I challenge any of you to produce your grandparents papers) is UnAmerican, and in the long run, you will not succeed at voting your bigotry into law.

This whole issue is a wank anyway, meant to work-up the bigoted right wing base into a lather, since gay marriage, and abortion ain't cutting it any more.

As for the bill, if Bush is going to sign it, you know it's gotta be a bad bill.

You blithering moron. No one in this entire thread was talking about legislating religion on anyone, so stop trying to confuse the issue. We are talking about the state upholding the rule of law.

As for my grandparents, on my mothers side, my grandmother immigrated to the united states with her family to avoid the rize of Nazi power in Germany in the late 1930. She entered at Ellis Island and her naturalization papers are in the possession of my uncle after she passed. My maternal grandfather needs no papers, he was a full blooded Potawatomi indian and I am proud to hold that heritage still.

My paternal grandmother was born in the country to naturalized Irish immigrants and my granfather to a Cherokee father and natural born Georgian mother.

The immigration issue has nothing to do with race or bigotry, except to those fighting against the rule of law. I welcome immigrants of all nationalities and all color of skin. I insist that they follow the laws of this country and come here legally or go home. I do not care if there are a million illegal British immigrants, they need to head back and do it correctly.

In your tiny little brain that forments the conspiracy theories and left wing propaganda, can you not understand the difference between following the law and blatantly ignoring it? No I guess the example you have as leaders tend to teach you that laws only matter when it is politically expedient for you. This is a simple issue, you want to immigrate to this country? Fine. Great. We love that idea. Do so legally. Otherwise you are a CRIMINAL and deserve to be booted back to the contry from whence you came.

Also, do so with the intent of becoming an American, not establishing your own little nation among this one. The American tradition of immigration is a melting pot. We are made stronger by the integration of different cultured into our own, not by the subversion of our culture by others. Multiculturalism is a destructive force for any nation.

Oh and as to you last point, Bush signed the minimum wage increase into law too, so I guess that makes it a bad law. Thanks for agreeing with me.

Try and keep up Marie...something relate to others, and conversations and comments take different turns...

And CCC has one of his grandparents papers...goodie for CCC.

BTW - you don't become an American perse - you become a citizen, of the United States.

Actually, the min wage was an ear mark, not a bill...
