HISTORICAL QUOTE OF THE WEEK - "Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other." ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

The debate is over and throughout the day pundits will be discussing the winners, losers and the political implications to the candidates especially the front runners, Giuliani, McCain and Romney.

From a personal observation from the Koger Center and listening to questions and comments after the debate not much has changed in the overall GOP picture from before the debate. The first tier candidates are still comfortably in the lead while the second tier candidates are looking for ways to get voters to notice them.'

Many of those candidates did have the stand up and take notice impact last night as they took the opportunity to scrutinize the comments and records of the front runners and get in some rather interesting barbs in the process.

Though the barbs made for good sound bites the impact they will have on voters at least at this point in the campaign will be negligible. One second tier candidate whose chances are slim to gain the nomination is Congressman Ron Paul. His comment last night concerning 9/11 and how US policy and our , "bombing Iraq, " prior to September 11 caused Al Qaeda to attack this Nation has caused quite a stir in many circles today.

I had opportunity to question Congressman Paul after the debate on this particular statement of his and asked this question, " How do you as a Presidential candidate who is running to be the leader of the nation, justify to the American people blaming the single most devastating attack on the country on years of bombing Iraq and being in the Middle East ?"

Paul tried to deny that this is what he said so I interrupted him and said, " Congressman those were you own words and is what you said." he then tired to explain to me that CIA involvement in Iran, Iraq and our presence in the Middle East since the Gulf War along with taking out Saddam Hussein has caused a blow back effect which brought about 9/11 and the problems in Iraq today.

I then said to Paul, " So what you are saying is that when attacked we do not have the right to defend ourselves because Al Qaeda may be mad at us because we have a presence in the Middle East ? " To which he replied, "I don't understand you question." So I repeated the questions and he then accused me of questioning his patriotism. I replied that I wasn't questioning his patriotism just his contention that when attacked we do not have the right to defend ourselves.

Ron Paul the GOP candidate for President then began repeating Democrat talking points beginning with, " I would not have had a problem if we had gone after Al Qaeda but Bush stopped fighting them and went into Iraq." He followed with, "Bushes Iraq policy has allowed Usama Bin Laden to hide in the hills of Pakistan who is being led by a dictator with nuclear weapons and our own government calls him and ally."

I mentioned to him then before I finished that I believed he was running for the wrong party and needed to change the ,"R," to a ,"D." Probably not the best finish to an interview but I had all I could stomach of Ron Paul.

I had opportunity to have more productive interviews with both Congressman Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo which I will elaborate on in another article. I did have opportunity to ask a question of someone I had not expected to see in Columbia. Former Maryland Lt. Governor and Senate Candidate Michael Steele was in the spin room.

I actually caught him of guard with my question which was, " There is talk in many GOP circles that whoever wins the nomination would benefit greatly in selecting you as their running mate. What are your thoughts on this and would you consider accepting ?"

Steele laughed and said, " I don't know what kind of water they've been drinking, you definatly caught me off guard with that one. I am concentrating my time and efforts on working for and doing what is best to boost the Republican Party and insure that we have the best and most qualified candidates to run for office with the goal of taking back the majority. As for VP ....well thanks for the thought but you really caught me off guard with that one, it was a good question and we will have to see."

As far as Giuliani, McCain and Romney, after they had a few moments on Hannity and Combs after the debate they promptly waved and in the midst of the entourage quickly exited the Spin Room. So we had no opportunity to question any of the three front runners.

All in all the day was informative and very productive especially for the Fair Tax rally. The impact from the rally has caused the GOP to take notice and seriously consider the Fair Tax in its 2008 platform. I talked with many of the GOP state chairman off the record and they mentioned that they will be discussing the fair tax in party meetings being held in Columbia this week.

As far as the GOP candidates while the front runners are still safely in the lead, some of the lesser candidates did benefit from the exposure and the questions. The Republicans for Planned Parenthood that I reported on yesterday have been found out to be Democrat plants to damage Rudi Giuliani with the conservative base. This story could have a little play when if it comes out in the MSM.

I also want to give a special thank you to my team whose help and exhaustive work yesterday made the day less complicated and hectic. Chris Lovelace and Travis Whitaker were invaluable and did an excellent job with pictures and helping me chase down people and stories. Pictures and interviews will follow over the next few days.

I suspect that as time goes on, either an outsider coming in, or a serious misstep will derail all but a couple of these candidates.

I think Ron Paul just derailed himself, Ken! I was madder at him last night that Rudy was! Voting for him would be voting Democrat for sure.

I agree that the three front runners remain the three front runners. Who was it that made that crack about Jack Bauer? I think it was Tancredo, wasn't it? Whoever it was, if he was serious, I want him for Secretary of Defense! :)

Good work. I'll be looking forward to your updates.

So it was a conspiracy that Paul was more organized than the others, so that he conspired to win the Faux News Poll? Or what?

Anyway, Ron Paul was never a serious candidate. So it makes perfect sense for you guys to focus on him.

That opportunity to speak with the participants had to be exciting! I am so jealous.

Ken, I am suppoerting Duncan Hunter. I have seen him in two debates now, and he has delivered a solid performance. Everyone agrees that he is a strong conservative and gave excellent answers.

I have yet to hear Hunter make a statement that I don't agree with. The election is a long way off. If Hunter can get enough grassroots support, he can easily move into the upper tier of Candidates.

We need to stop dismissing Hunter and start taking him seriously as a candidate. The only thing stopping him from succeeding is the people who refuse to accept him as a viable candidate. Get behind him. He is a true Conservative.

Let's see, Ron Paul has never voted for a tax increase, never voted for a congressional pay raise, is a strong supporter of gun rights, has never taken a government or lobbyist-paid junket, gets 98 percent of his money from individuals rather than corporations, believes the Departments of Energy and Education, as well as the IRS should be abolished. He clearly believes in lower taxes and smaller, more limited government. He also introduced the Sanctity of Human Life bill in Congress, which, had it passed, would have granted federal protection to every unborn child and would have nullified Roe v Wade.

When I was a kid, we used to call such a person a conservative Republican. Now, it appears that many of the folks who come onto this site believe that being a Republican requires big spending, big deficits, becoming the world's policeman, and pretty much following Bush blindly.

I laughed as I saw how much of a tizzy Hannity was in following last night's debate. The corporate powers that be won't let Paul win because he cannot be bought. The are already out there bashing him and talking about excluding him from future debates.

Ron Paul is a mess!

He believes in impeaching the President, the President knew about 9-11 beforehand, and America had 9-11 coming.

Tell me what's wrong with that picture?

Ron Paul in NO President Reagan yet he invokes his name at every chance!

Ron Paul is a Terrorist appeasing, let's negotiate with terrorists, bring ALL our Troops home NOW! and believes America should be an Island.

There must be a way to get Ron Paul off the GOP Ticket!

Only idiots like Mudkitty and Rob would have the gall to try and tell bonafide conservatives who is or is not a conservative.

Glad you gave Ron Paul the business. Osama bin Laden has been very clear: we could abandon Iraq and Israel, leave the Middle East entirely and he would still consider it his religious duty, commanded by Allah, to fight until the United States is overthrown and the U.S. Constitution is replaced with Sharia Law.

Now, there might be good points to that, such as moonbats like Mudslinger wearing a burka and Rob having his tongue cut out for offending the faithful, but even that wouldn't entice me to support Ron Paul.

Marie, Ron Paul is not on the GOP ticket. That is what the primaries are for - TO DETERMINE WHO WILL BE ON THE TICKET.

Mike and his childish name-calling - nothing new. I must say that enjoying the idea that Sharia Law could be used to commit violent acts against Americans who have a different view than you is both sick and about as un-American as you can get. But, you are so filled with hate I am not surprised.

That said, I am interested Mike, please direct me to where bin Laden said what you wrote above. I have not seen that. A link would be much appreciated.

Just one additional though about Ron Paul and his invoking Reagan.

In 1988 Paul who now tries to claim loyalty to the Reagan legacy and continually tries to use Reagan as an example in all of his points, was not only a non-Reagan supporter but actaully ran against Reagan on the Liberatarian ticket.

Now he tries to act as if he was always behind him. Just one more in a long list that shows this man for who he is.

Rob, Paul has some conservative ideas as do all of the candidates but his isolationist andblame America stands are NOT conservative

Also many of his stances are much more left leaning than conservative.

Ron Paul is a conservative who comes from the limited government, low tax, states-rights, Liberatarian wing of the Republican Party. He let's people know where he stands. Nothing wrong with that - but, I am just amused by how much visceral dislike, and in some cases outright hatred, some folks on this blog as well as others have for him.

Rudy is pro-life, pro-gay, anti-gun - NOT CONSERVATIVE.

McCain - no need to go into why the Republicans say - NOT CONSERVATIVE.

Mitt is anti-gun, he used to be pro-life and pro-gay. He has flip flopped enough to be able to say - NOT CONSERVATIVE.

Those are your leading candidates. I know you want to draft Thompson, but he is not in the race, and won't get into the race for months because he wants to steer clear of mud-slinging and having to take a position on Iraq. That is not leadership, that is political calculation in an effort to improve his chances for winning.

Blogger The Liberal Lie The Conservative Truth said...

Never said any of the front runners are conservative. On the contrary I have been very vocal about their lack of conservatism which is why I have not been able to back any of them.

That is the main reason I'm waiting for Thompson. You know as well as I do that with the never ending campaign that we have now any advantage that one can get in a calculated move is almost necessary in order to, " beat the competition."

That does not detract from leadership but just shows that he is also poltically saavy.

As far as Paul I agree that he has some conservative ideas as I have said but he also has some very liberal ones too. Additionally his isolationist stance which is straight Liberatarian platform is not a conservative stance at all.

I think we can agree that no one can satisfy everyone. All of the current candidates have their flaws. The only thing I want to point out is that some right-leaning folks (I am not talking about you) are all in a tizzy about Paul, but don't seem to mind the glaring inconsistencies of the leading candidates. They are spending so much time bashing a guy who is under 5 percent in national polls. It is just ridiculous.

As soon as Thompson jumps into the grinder he will have his gaffes, the skeletons will come out of the closet, and folks will start beating up on him. I don't really blame him for waiting.

My only issue with him is that he has not taken ANY position on Iraq - which will be a central issue (if not THE ISSUE) in 2008. You call it political savvy, I call it a failure to stake out a leadership position.

But wait, doesn't that involve bombing and going in to Muslim countries?

What a mess. R to D, good someone needed to tell him. I say that is a bad way to start an interview but to end it that way is JUST FINE!

Rob I agree that the flak over Paul is much ado about nothing because he has no chance. In fact I have mentioned to many GOP friends to take him with a grain of salt and not get into such an uproar, though he did deserve being called on his 9/11 comments from the debate which is what I attempted when I talked to him.

Thanks MD!

12:52 PM, May 17, 2007
Blogger Rob said...

That's fine, but Paul's comments are consistent with what the CIA and the 9/11 Commission have concluded and explicitly stated. More specifically, that U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East has bred the kind of hatred that drives bin Laden to act.

That does not mean that innocent civilians deserve to be attacked, but it is a statement of fact.

And in disagree with me, you disagree with the idea of actually going after the people who attacked us on 9/11. You are irrational. I may even have to start going easy on you.

North America is a continent, as is South America. They are known as the American Continents.

The USA has often been lovingly, but mistakingly referred to as America, but America is a continent, not a nation.

Are you saying Mexicans are not Americans? Are you seriously saying that? Are you saying that Canada isn't a North American Nation?

You can't tell the difference between a continent and a country. You can't tell the difference between a colloquial expression and a fact.

That's why I have to start going easy on you, you are clearly challenged.
