2006 A FORWARD GLANCE - THE SUNDAY COMMENTARY

Happy New Year ! The new year has rolled in as it always does at midnight on December 31st with great fanfare and celebration, some overly so! Dick Clark hosted another one and it looks like Father Time has finally caught up to the ageless one, yet his spirits were as strong as ever. 2005 was an extremely busy year with politics as usual, devastating storms, hero's defending freedom in foreign lands and the loss of several prominent individuals. So now that we have entered a new year what can we expect. Will this year bring surprises and changes that will astound us ? Will 2006 bring a reason for fear and laughter, cry and shake our heads in disbelief ? The answer is a definite MAYBE! There is only One who knows the future and God does not reveal the details to us but expects us to view each day with open eyes as we see the future unfold trusting in His divine providence. Therefore I will not attempt to predict what 2006 will hold but there are many things on the horizon that I do believe will take fruition in the upcoming year and all are important to our country and will give us pause at one time or another throughout the year.

First the obvious:

The War - The War on Terror will remain a focus in 2006 simply speaking because there is still an enemy that wishes to kill us and we must fight until they are defeated completely. Iraq will be at the center as Iraqi government and Security Forces take on more of the responsibility of protecting their country and US forces will become more of a supporting role as numbers decrease but a large force remains to continue the mission until its end.

The Alito Hearings - The hearings are set to begin in early January and a fight will ensue. The left is already positioning themselves for this and fight they will for the confirmation of Alito is the end of their liberal hold on the Supreme Court and they will create a fireball of accusations in the press and grill Alito with the usual questions to show their base that they are , "saving America," from conservatives. In the end I believe he will be confirmed and take his seat as an Associate Justice.

The Wire Tap, "Scandal" - This is one that will get nasty. Usually anything that is in the news just prior to the Christmas break dries up on the vine never to be heard from again. The liberal press has kept this story alive until their friends in the Democratic Party can return to Capitol Hill and take up the false accusation of , "illegal, " wire taps against, "all, " Americans by the President again. The Justice Department has taken the reins somewhat with the investigation, and rightfully so, as to who leaked security secrets to the New York Times. Though the left will try to spearhead an impeachment investigation the truth that the President did not break the law will prevail and the investigation should become the prominent focus with charges being brought against those involved. Hopefully the New York Times will FINALLY be held accountable for their damaging so called reporting.

The Mid Term Elections - This story will have quite a number of other stories that will emerge around it. The left will attempt throughout the year to continue to create scandals and accusations against the President and the Republican majority to position themselves for November. In the later part of December Minority Leader Harry Reid announced as such when in a press conference he stated that New York's Chuch Schumer was their key strategist in 2005 and will continue as such in 2006. Of course Howard, "the mouth, " Dean will continue to spew his form of insane rhetoric and when all is said and done this political attack agenda will have the same success that it has had in the past and I believe that when election day is over the Republicans will still be in the majority with a possible pick up of seats in both the House and Senate.

The President's Agenda - The President has already announced that his focus for 2006 will be of course the War, tax reform and immigration. Whether any of his initiatives take hold will depend on the backbone of the majority in the Senate, which in the past has spent too much energy compromising with the more vocal minority. Toward the end of 2005 the Senate did show a little backbone and let's hope that it increases in 2006. The House has always shown the ability to get the job done and then when the ball was passed to the Senate failure ensued. I think, though that the majority has seen the light and realized that conservatives placed them in office and with 2006 being an election year this should prompt the passage of a more conservative agenda with the left fighting it along the way to also secure their base for the elections.

The Economy - 2006 will continue to bring economic prosperity to The United States as the economy will experience steady growth. There is nothing on the horizon that has the ability to slow the growth that has already been achieved and this year should remain strong.

Things To Keep An Eye On - Iran and Syria are coming more to the fore front and may become a prominent threat in 2006. In December a missile attack in Israel that Al Qaeda claimed was found to have used missiles supplied by Syria. This may signify that Syria is making a move in the Middle East. Iran is not backing down from their nuclear development and have become more blatant in claiming its use for weaponry as opposed to their false claim of use as and energy source. This could develop into a confrontation of some type in 2006. Cuba is another place to keep your eye on. Castro's health has been declining and he does not have a clear succession in place. So when his demise comes Cuba will become anarchy until a new government forms. How that government forms will remain to be seen. Oppressed people have a way of expressing their freedom once a dictator dies. North Korea will continue to whine and threaten and China will strengthen their hand in financial markets which is not good for any economy because their cheap oppressed labor force will always produce less expensive goods.

Well there you have it. What will 2006 bring ? One can state the obvious, guess about the possibilities and hope for the best. But when all is said and done 2006 will bring to us each day what we as individuals make of it for ourselves. Yes government and world issues will play a part and we will watch as the country and world stages unfold throughout the year. Yet the beauty of being an American is that in our freedom WE control our destiny and WE THE PEOPLE make our lives what our hearts and minds and our beliefs hold within us! Happy New Year to all of you and may 2006 be safe, blessed and prosperous.

Oh yes I think the Liberals will do everything in thier power to smear President Bush in 06. We should all keep awake, the Liberals have thrown our National Security out the window so they can accomplish such a feet and win seats back in both houses at our expense. They are ruthless and care nothing if we get attacked agin. We have to keep our eyes on them and pound them into the ground this year.

Yes, those damn liberals. What with all of their concern for average Americans. Those foolish idiots actually care that a much greater percentage of Americans are living in poverty without health care than when Bushie took over.

Why do they keep saying Iraq is a quagmire? Our goals were to eliminate WMD and remove Saddam . . . and to rebuild a Iraq into a great democracy. Bushie knew that putting a mostly white, mostly Christian American military into the heart of the Middle East would be welcome by the people there. He also was very forthcoming when he told Americans that it would cost 2200 American lives and $300 billion American tax dollars (to date)so that we can build schools in Iraq.

Thank God we live under the rule of law, except of course for Bushie who clearly deserves to be above the law. I am just glad we have a president who finally realizes that the 1978 FISA is just so 70s and who has the moral conviction and courage to torture enemies because the Geneva Conventions are just so quaint.

I also don't get why they whine about the fact that the the budget situation has worsened every year under Bushie (after 8 consecutive years of improvement under Clinton). Or what the big deal is about the national debt exploding by almost $3 trillion since Bushie took over (now over $8 trillion).

Those liberals - we have to stop the fact that they want to smear Bushie. Once we crush the liberals we can live in peace and harmony under Bushie forever!

Syria and Iran will definately grow as a threat. As a result of the European lack of an ability to do anything at all about the situation. 2006 may be the breaking point of American - European (Great Britain aside) relationships. If Iran makes a move against Israel, America will go with Israel, Europe won't. Europe will further isolate itself from teh world, and the US will again be catapulted to take the lead.

Europe will be isolated from the world? The U.S. will lead? Lead who? Certainly Iran and (to a lesser extent) Syria pose problems, but Bushie has ensured that U.S. "leadership" is questioned around the world - torture, secret prisons, using bad/misleading/false intelligence, poor planning in Iraq, etc.

Rob, get off the torture, secret prisons etc. First it has nothing to do with the article and second since when is sleep deprevation and similar methods torture? As far as US leadership, I have yet to hear of ANY country that would not follow where we lead. France even bows to the truth of true leadership when push comes to shove and they are the whinies of Europe. The Us has and will coninue to lead and Bush has been a good war time leader even though the left continues to attempt to accuse him of anything that comes into their liberal minds. History will prove that what he has lead is the right war at the right time. Iraq is but ONE battlefield in a Global War on Terror and the left seems to forget this fact ! If you call a new constitution a fully elected government the over throw of a dictator, oppressed people finally experiencing freedom EVEN the freedom to protest and not fear reprocussion, and the US military making this possible then I guess then that Iraq is a quagmire as you put it!

Who are we leading in Iraq? Other than British troops (who are not directly under U.S. command anyway), who has sent significant help and is under our command? Iran, South Korea, Syria, throughout Africa, where is American leadership being followed?

What is victory in Iraq? As far as I remember, we went to find WMDs and remove Saddam. We did that.

You obviously do not believe that there is a civil war going on in Iraq - Shiites and Sunnis are at war.

Do you realize that 80 percent of Iraqis want us out of the country? More Iraqis say that their lives are worse now than under Saddam. The emerging government is more closely aligned to Iran than it is to the U.S. It certainly looks like it will turn into a Shiite-dominated Islamic theocracy.

Do you actually believe there is a functioning Western-style democracy in place there?
