After all of the hype, the speculation, the leaks and anticipation of the findings from the Iraq Study Group headed by former Secretary of State James Baker and Lee Hamilton this Congressionally convened commission offers little substance and no real ideas concerning the situation in Iraq. Their basic strategy consists of a responsible and gradual pull out by 2008 and negotiating with Iran and Syria. Nothing concerning controlling the sectarian violence, dealing with the terrorist elements including Al Qaeda or stabilizing the Iraqi government and Security Force other than embedding more US troops in certain high violence areas as support for Iraqi Security Forces. It took eight months to prepare and submit this vague and non-substantive report ? The report states the obvious that, "The situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating. There is no path that can guarantee success, but the prospects can be improved." then re-enforces the obvious once again, "Our most important recommendations call for new and enhanced diplomatic and political efforts in Iraq and the region, and a change in the primary mission of U.S. forces in Iraq that will enable the United States to begin to move its combat forces out of Iraq responsibly. We believe that these two recommendations are equally important and reinforce one another. If they are effectively implemented, and if the Iraqi government moves forward with national reconciliation, Iraqis will have an opportunity for a better future, terrorism will be dealt a blow, stability will be enhanced in an important part of the world, and America's credibility, interests and values will be protected." While the recommendations from the group offer more detail the basic plan as outlined by this highly touted group offers nothing in the way of a new or revised strategy, establishing much needed stability for the Iraq government. Nor do they tackle the continued sectarian and terrorist related violence and dealing with the increased involvement of Iran and Syria to further destabilize the situation by funding, backing and supplying fighters for the different factions that are creating the violence in the country. The suggestion to negotiate with Iran and Syria in essence rewards both countries for their participation in destabilizing Iraq by making them a partner in the establishment and stabilization of the country. Is this really how this group expects the United States to deal with rogue nations that use terrorism and weaponry as a negotiating tool in order to press their theocratic Islamic agenda on their neighbors ? Whatever happened to US policy that we do not negotiate with terrorists ? Yet this study group is advising that we negotiate with the recognized terrorist states of Iran and Syria in order so seek a stabilized Iraq and the ability to pull our troops out of the country. Their involvement in Iraq was designed to force through terror tactics the collapse of a free government in Iraq and the ability to dictate and establish policy that is in accordance to the Islamic radical governments and theocracy that rules Syria and Iran respectively and now the study group is suggesting that we negotiate and basically give these two terror states exactly what they have wanted, a say in how Iraq will be governed and a foot hold to controlling the country once we are gone! This group was a waste of time and money since it offers nothing new nor any substance as to how to deal with the Iraq situation other than to state the obvious and suggest the dangerous while pulling troops out to satisfy those calling for a pull out. All of us want our troops home, but to pull out without a plan to leave the country as a stable free government without the danger of being overthrown by radical regimes such as Iran and Syria and ending any threat of Al Qaeda and other terror elements taking over the country is dangerous to Iraqis, the Middle East as a whole, Israel and ultimately The United States. If this is the best that Congress can provide as far as a, "plan, " for Iraq then heaven help us! Thankfully the military and the Commander in Chief handle strategy and do not have to follow suggestions when they are as weak and dangerous as those supplied by the Iraq Study Group!

I aggree, Ken, that bilateral talks with either Syria or Iran is out of the question. The only way we can negotiate with Syria and Iran is if we bomb them back to the stone age first!

We know, though, that the terrorists and the factional groups in Iraq draw the majority of their strength from the disunity of our country. The study group's findings is straight down the middle of the road. As was stated during the course of their press conference this morning, they are going to draw fire from both the right and the left. The movement embedding our troops with the Iraqis is a sound strategy because it will help keep them from fighting the opposing religious factions. The point that they made is that military action, by itself, isn't enough. The economic and political pressure we can bring to bear onto the Iraqi government is our most powerful weapon. Where would they be without our financial and moral support? So - in that respect - I don't find the entire report to be a complete waste of time; just part of it.

I do find it amazing that you got a post out on this so fast! :)

The fact that most of the report had been leaked one way or another prior to today had much of the synopsis available throughout the web. While they did pose points concerning options non of it has much if any substance as to how or when etc. Their entire basis is negotiation with the two terror states and pulling out by 2008. Not much to help solve a problem at all!

"None of it has much if any substance as to how or when, etc." That I enthusiastically agree with, Ken. Also, as I said, we should not be negotiating with either Syria or Iran. That's just plain idiocy!

Yes, Ken, you are right. Thankfully Bush is still in charge? He has done such a great job in Iraq so far.

What I found interesting was that the Iraq Study Group reported today that U.S. military and intelligence officials have been systematically underreporting the level of violence in Iraq in order to suit the Bush administration's policy goals.

Quoting from the article, "The panel pointed to one day last July when U.S. officials reported 93 attacks or significant acts of violence. "Yet a careful review of the reports for that single day brought to light 1,100 acts of violence."

If that is true, then the American people are being lied to about the nature and course of the war.

By the way, Rumsfeld's memo to the President just before his resignation essentially called for a significant change in Iraq - including a significant drawdown in forces.

So, the American people want to find a way out of Iraq. The Iraqi people want us out. The Iraqi government wants us out. Both Republicans and Dems want to get out. Rumsfeld wants us out. There is little support for staying indefinitely as the President continues to suggest we must do.

I think most Americans want us out of Iraq after we have secured a victory; not out just for the sake of being out. I also think most Americans realize that the military has been mishandled in that they have been artificially constrained from doing what they are capable of doing.

From what I have been able to glean from the report, there is little substance, but much rhetoric. Reporting the obvious (the situation is grave) isn’t constructive when absent contributive recommendations. After all, the situation was ‘grave’ on Dec 8, 1941 but with unified resolve we overcame an immense blow to become victorious. The unified resolve with which we entered Iraq has subsequently been subverted. Unless that unified resolve for victory resurfaces soon, we will leave Iraq much like we left Vietnam – unable to resist falling into the hands of the enemy. Hopefully the forthcoming ‘studies’ will yield plans with some meat on the bone.

I think the same. If we keep the faith and let the the Soldiers and the Commanders on the ground finish the job they WANT to finish, since they are the ONLY ones besides the President that know for sure what is going on over there this whole thing will have a decent outcome for everyone.

God knows this is tough but we need now more than ever to stand behind our President and the Troops and let the Troops decide what is what. If they want to finish the job right, let them.

We all can sit back and get sick about all this but the Troops see things we dont. I think all my faith is going to be with them and letting them decide what should be done there and grit my teeth and tough it out with them. I mean who are we to tell the troops anything?

We dont need any more reports except from the Commanders on the ground and the Troops!
