SENATE NEAR COMPROMISE WITH ILLEGALS BUT STILL HANGING ON MYTHS
The Senate neared a compromise on the issue of illegal immigration but the bill still has little in the way of teeth and only offers a staggered form of amnesty to most of the 11 million already in the country. With the small penalties and the paying of back taxes even this weak amnesty bill gives absolutely no incentive for illegals to come forward and identify themselves. Personally the idea of checking ID's when making any purchase even food crossed my mind but then there would be an out cry of racial profiling. All of this rhetoric is based mostly on myths concerning the necessity of illegals staying in the country. I realize as I have said before that logistically and economically it would be next to impossible to deport all 11 million provided they could be found but the falsehood about most of their status is simply a myth.
Myth 1 - Paying back taxes - Most illegals are paid under the table in cash so where is the tax record to verify back taxes ?
Myth 2 - They perform jobs that Americans do not want - While there is some merit to this myth as a whole illegals perform jobs that if available would be filled by American workers desperate for work and at similar pay if that is what the job offered. Many American workers are being layed off because sub-contractors have a wealth of illegals and charge for their employment services while making a huge profit for themselves.
Myth 3 - The cost of products and services would rise greatly without illegals - I'll use the construction industry as an example of how this myth has its falsehoods. A builder charges X dollars per square foot for building a house. The cost per square is based on the location and the housing economy where the house is built. The square foot charge would remain the same regardless of the cost of employees. The difference with contractors using illegals is that in most cases their profit margin is higher because they pay a lower wage to illegals.
Myth 4 - Illegals are coming for the American way of life - While I am sure that this is true for some the vast majority have no interest in becoming an American just to work in this country and send what they earn back to Mexico. Evidence this with the large amount of money that is engulfed from U.S. employers into the Mexican economy and the fact that most illegals are actually pushing for our culture to adapt to them rather then adapting to our culture.
Myth 5 - Getting strict with illegal immigration will cause the Latino voters to rebel against the party that enacts tough legislation - In most interviews and blogs that are of American Latino origin and also by the statements of most of the Latino Communities leaders they are just as disgusted with the illegal situation as most Americans. Getting strict with illegals would actually win the voter confidence of the Latino Community rather than lose it.
This is the key campaign issue this year and it is not going away with the passage of the weak Senate bill nor with the compromise that will come out of committee with the House bill. Whoever gets tough on the border and with the issue of illegal immigration will have a distinct advantage at the ballot box in November.

This senate bill is truly a disgrace. It is an insult to the American public. Wishy-washie at best, where is the enforcement? The illegals will thumb their noses at the senate version and refuse to pay one cent, will not learn English and will still proudly fly the Mexican flag on American soil. What will Senator John McCain say about that? The same thing he says about his Campaign Finance Bill, never acknowledging its utter failure. This do-nothing bill should be rejected, and rightly so, by every decent American, liberal and conservative. It will do absolutely nothing to solve the illegal problem, but will be seen by Americans as nothing less than the wholesale selling of American citizenship!
The Senate "compromise" bill is dead - and it should be. It was a horrible piece of legislation that would have done nothing but provide amnesty and encourage more illegals to come in. The new illegals would have just forged phone bills and pay stubs to pretend like they had been in the country for 5 years. Under the Senate plan, illegals who could show that they had been in the country for 5 years or longer would have a clear path to full citizenship.
The Senate bill would not have solved a problem. It would have only served to elevate the immigration problem.
That whole under 2 years, 2-5 years, or over 5 years concept was possibly the most stupid and pathetic reasoning I have ever seen.

"I have an idea for these Senate solons, the McCains, the Hagels, the Specters, the guys who wanted to give us this breakthrough bill. How about you prove your scheme before making it a law? Prove it. They want to send back -- in this breakthrough bill -- they want to send back all the immigrants who have not been here two years. All right, we don't need a new law for that. Just go do it. Show us how this is going to work. Do what they propose. Round up the terrible twos and send 'em home.
If you show you can do that, then come talk to us about a bill, but prove you can do this. You sit up there and you want to foment all this legislation. We don't need any new legislation anyway, just have laws on the books that nobody has enforced, but this one is simple. McCain, Specter, Hagel, and George W. Bush are not for deportation. They have openly said it is not possible.
Basically many Republicans do not want to hurt American corporations who benefit from cheap labor. High profits through low wages - simple economics.
They are for deporting people here less than 2 years. They are for it. It is impossible to deport the total 11 million.

Well, your evil republican version goes to economics. So in general help support the US economically, be it right or not.

Both may have impure reasoning behind it but which is worse: using an issue to better the economy or using it just to win elections? Aren’t you always complaining about how the economy is so messed up, which it is not, maybe you should let capitalism be…well capitalism. Your argument would be that the Mexicans are supporting our economy. Well they are hired by the evil republicans.
So repeat after me “the republicans are keeping the economy of the United States alive.” Without what you are claiming the economy would bomb. You are claiming it is the republicans doing this. So how can you ever say that the economy is not alive thanks to the big huge republican companies?
First of all, illegal immigration is not a Republican or Democratic issue - this is an American issue. All Americans are impacted by this problem.
No, Republicans are not keeping the economy alive, the Japanese and the Chinese are keeping the economy alive. They are buying U.S. debt at a record clip in order to fund our huge deficits. The currently hold about $1 trillion in American Treasury Securities (U.S. debt). Thank you Bush for overspending and then selling off America to pay for it!
Second, illegals in this country help big business at the expense of the average worker. Corporations reap profits, while the influx of workers keeps wage pressure low which drives salaries down.
Oh yeah, the 2 year rule for deporations is a great idea and "proves" Republicans are for deportations. Give me a break, there are millions of recently arrived illegals, if we cannot deport 11 million, we cannot deport 5 million. If you want to argue that we can, you are dreaming. But let's assume that we do start deportations for those folks. Tell me, what recently arrived illegal is not going to just forge a phone bill or lease agreement to "prove" they have been in the country for 5 years. Then they get their amnesty and move right ahead to full citizenship. The Republican Senate's plan just makes it easier to provide amnesty for illegals.
