OBAMA LIES ABOUT ILLINOIS GAS TAX HOLIDAY

John McCain and Hillary Clinton have proposed a gas tax holiday for the summer to save about 18 cents per gallon by suspending the federal gas tax from Memorial Day until Labor Day.

Of course Hillary wants to replace the , "loss," with a , "windfall profit tax," basically billing the oil companies for the 18 cents, which we all know will be passed on to consumers by higher pump prices and eliminating the tax holiday savings.

Additionally Hillary's , "windfall tax," is open ended so that when Labor Day roles around and the tax holiday is over, not only will the 18 cents paid by consumers be added back the 18 cents that the oil companies would pay and pass on to consumers, the windfall tax would remain thus giving a net increase of 36 cents per gallon when compared to the price at the pump just before Memorial Day if her proposal is adopted.

At least McCain's plan is a real holiday by eliminating the 18 cents for three months.

Barack Obama has opposed the idea saying it is pandering for votes, which it is but also claiming that it would only save 30 cents a day or 28 dollars over three months.

Now unless my elementary math is wrong if one uses 10 gallons of gas every other day, for example, then the savings would be 1.80 cents every two days or 90 cents per day and $83.70 over the tax holiday period.

Those who use more would save more and those who use less would save less. But I don't know about you but 10 gallons every other day is a far more realistic figure than those that Obama presented.

In the above video he also states that the gas tax holiday was tried in Illinois while he was a State Senator and that it failed.

Two things he did not mention in his fabrication of the truth. First in Illinois he not only supported it but was so enthusiastic that he made the following statement on the Illinois Senate floor, that he wanted signs placed on pumps in his District saying, "Senator Obama reduced your gasoline prices."

A study of the Illinois gas holiday shows that a full sixty percent of the tax elimination went directly to the consumer thus saving each gas user in the State of Illinois during the tax holiday.

The tax was not accompanied by any windfall tax like Clinton proposes but a straight tax elimination for a certain period like proposed by John McCain.

The study showed that the elimination of the Illinois 5% tax gave an actual savings at the pump of 3% and when reinstated the rise in price was only 4%. All passed on to the consumer by the adoption of the Obama backed Illinois State Gas Holiday.

Once again the inexperienced Senator from Illinois lies to prove a point and shows that he cannot be trusted. At least Hillary though proposing a disaster plan with her windfall tax, does not hide behind a lie this time as she has before.

Lying Democrats. No matter how you look at it John McCain will be running against a habitual liar in the Fall.

They have absolutely no shame about their lying either, Ken, but it's obvious that if they're honest about their intentions they wouldn't get to first base. Can you imagine a Democrat saying, "we're going to screw you little people by taxing the rich more, which will cause a domino effect because the rich never eat their losses, they make it up by firing people or any other means at their disposal, but they will not take the loss. You people will take the loss but you're too dumb to understand the economy." Yeah, that'd go over real good. LOL!

Obama's gas usage estimation is unrealistic because he doesn't have to pay for his gas. He hasn't got a clue what the poorer folks have to pay just to get to work and back home every day. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe we, the taxpayers, pay for the Senator's gas. I think it's one of the perks of being a public servant. I know that "public servant" has become a joke. Someone needs to tell them that they're supposed to be working for us!

BTW: Yesterday I had to pay $20.00 for one gas can full of deisel.

Politicians of either party are no longer statesmen, they are simply a new form of parasite fueled by career ambitions.

The only differences between most Republicans and most Democrats is that the Republicans at least examine the down-the-road ramifications of their agendas and tend to be more honest with the voters (for the most part) than the portsiders are.

A conservative would not tolerate a bald faced liar running Republican, whereas a Democrat would be more than willing to overlook any extreme measure of dishonesty, infidelity or even treason as long as his/her candidate wins an election.

Looks like you're picking up robo-spam, Ken. Dang! Well, better them than trolls I guess.

Hillary barely squeaked by in Indiana. Seth's right about Democrats willing to overlook any measure of dishonesty. Obama's associations doesn't even phase them!

Obama's the Dem nominee. He has been for weeks, but the media loves the ratings so they have been pushing Hillary to keep the race going. I have been saying it for weeks. He will be the President and he will win it easily.

The gas tax holiday is just plain stupid. That is why there isn't A SINGLE ECONOMIST - NOT A SINGLE ONE - who argues for it. It takes billions out of highway and bridge repair funds, and it saves the average driver about $10/month. Pandering gimmick that is just silly.

McCain never lies? Give me a break. He told the WSJ that he doesn't understand economics, then when he was asked about the comment he denied it, before laughing it off and saying he has good advisors. He claims he told the White House not to use the infamous "Mission Accomplished" banner - but there is video of him giving a speech on the floor of the Senate praising the president's misguided photo op in the days that followed the event. He didn't vote for Bush in 2000, now claims that he did. He had an affair - that is about as big a lie as you can commit. What a joke. I could go on, but all of this stuff will come out in the general election campaign.

Ken, one other thing. The average driver does not use 10 gallons of gas every other day. Using up 5 gallons a day means that you are driving about 100 miles per day (at 20 MPG).

Certainly, there are people who commute 50 miles each way, but those are not average drivers. I have a 40 minute commute that I make 3 times a week. On average, I use about 15 gallons per week. So the gas tax holiday would save me about $2.76/week.

Obviously some people drive more but many people drive much less. Are you suggesting that the average driver in America is driving 100 miles every day - including on weekends? If you are doing that, I feel sorry for you.

Obama is using an average number that seems pretty fair and accurate to me. Calling him a liar about it seems a bit ridiculous.

It's a shame EVERY SINGLE ECONOMIST agrees with Obama, then? Not one single expert thinks this is a good idea. But why listen to intellectuals? Since they're smart they must all be liberals, right?

Rob, the lie was concerning his statement in the video about the failure of the Illinois Gas Holiday. He not only supported it but was a backer and the stats show that it worked and did not fail as Obama stated in the video.

Also many more drivers commute more than you. Mu job cannot be figured inthe eqaution soince it requires a considerable amount of driving.

But I do not live in a large metro area and most who drive here drive anywhere from 30 to 40 miles daily each way to work because of the relation betwen Myrtle Beach and the areas that surround it.

I have family and friends who live in Atlanta and the SF Bay Area who drive a similar amount from bed room communities and drive into the cities to work.

I also have friends who live around DC who drive a similar amount of miles each day in order to get to and from work.

If you look at the distance of the bedroom communitied from almost every major metro area, most are located at least 30 to 40 miles from the major nearest. A distance that those who communte into the city must drive every day.

Ken, I think it is fair to say that the average driver puts 15,000 miles on his/her car per year. That is a little high, but we'll go with it. If that is true, that means that over a year, the person is driving 41 miles a day every day. That is about 2 gallons of gass a day if you assume 20 MPG.

So the average driver saves about 37 cents per day with the gas tax holiday, or $11/month ($33 for a summer).

Even if it miraculously passed through Congress (and they figured out how to pay for all the highway and bridge work), and it somehow cleared Bush's veto pen (he has already said he would veto it), it doesn't do much anyway.

It is a pandering gimmick!

Not trying to be argumentative Rob, but four years ago I worked part time on the weekends at a car dealership helping a freind who was trying to expand his business.

NADA and the other books at that time changed their mileage allowance to 20,000 miles because trade ins were coming in with more mileage because drivers were driving farther to work etc.

The books realized that if they kept 15,000 as the average trade ins on used cars would be the pits, (as if they really mean anything anyway).

Also I don't know how it is where you are but here in SC the excessive mileage discount for tax purposes is based on an average of 25,000 miles per year.

I have heard from some friends who still wokr in the car business that NADA and the other books are thinking of changing the mileage allowance based at 25,000 average per year.

15,000 as a basis went by the wayside several years ago and the average si still climbing as city workers are moving farther out into the burbs and smaller towns close to major cities.

Half of Myrtle Beaches work force live more than 25 miles from Myrtle beach and again this in not considered a large metro area.

The Illinois gas tax holiday was considered a success and the article I found the information on is from the very liberal Huffington post.

Here is the link. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/05/06/study-illinois-gas-tax-ho_n_100350.html

Ken, I am not sure also why you say he is lying. He was asked on Meet the Press about it and the video you posted showed me nothing to suggest that he is lying.

Using your own figures, if you eliminate the 5% sales tax but consumers only get 3% savings, that means that the remaining 2% went somewhere - it went to the oil companies just as Obama said.

Let's keep in mind that the 5% sales tax holiday was when gas was about $2/gallon. So, that means that consumers should have saved 10 cents per gallon of gas. But in reality they only were saving 6 cents per gallon. The oil companies sqeezed out another 4 cents in profit per gallon.

And in the end, with a savings of 6 cents per gallon Illinois drivers would have been saving a grand total of less than a dollar a week. Let's say they saved about $4/month.

But, if you assume that there are 10 million cars in Illinois (I am just guessing), the state lost $60 million in revenue (based on 15 gallons per week) and the oil companies gained a profit of $24 million (they pocketed 40% of the tax savings) that they would not have otherwise made.

If you think that it really worked that is fine, but common sense says otherwise.

OK Ken, let's assume that the average driver drives 25,000 miles per year.

That comes out to 68 miles per day. If we assume that According to the NHTSA, the aveage gas mileage for new vehicles sold in the U.S. is about 25 MPG. So let's just round it off and say that the average driver uses 3gallons of gas per day.

That means that drivers can save about 55 cents per day, or $16.50 per month if the gas tax holiday is put in place.

So for the summer, the average driver, driving 25,000 miles per year would save a total of $50.

Of course, the NHTSA, Edmonds.com, AAA, the U.S. DOE and plenty of other sources cite figure between 12,000 and 15,000 miles per year.

So it is again hard to see how you think the average driver is going to save any more than $28 for the summer.
