DEMOCRATS SHOOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT
One of the most touted parts of the much ballyhooed , "first 100 hours, " of the Democrat majority in the Congress was the passage of the increase in the federal minimum wage.
House and Senate Democrats passed with the help of many Republicans an increase that over two years would take the minimum wage from $5.15 and hour to $ 7. 50 per hour. The President indicated that he would sign the bill so for the new Democrat Majority everything looked peachy for their economy busting minimum wage increase.
That is until they decided to play dirty politics. The current battle between the Congress and the President over the military appropriations bill in which the Congress has placed unconstitutional time lines within the legislation has a very interesting earmark in it.
As a ploy to try and force the President into signing this bill the Congress tagged the bill with the minimum wage increase. Since the President is going to VETO the bill and the Congress does not have enough votes to over turn a Presidential VETO, the minimum wage increase is now dead in the water and Congress will have to go back to square one to pass it once again.
I am not saddened at all by this turn of events because of the damage that an increase will do to our robust economy. But this also once again proves that Democrats are more interested in politics and power than in even enacting one of their pet projects, that THEY tout as vital to the American people.

Well Well,
Thank's for pointing this out Ken!
They need President Bush to get ANYTHING done and they have shot themselves in the foot alright.
Gee ya think they will want to compromise on minimum wage?
After the stunt they pulled with this boner of a bill?
Oh this is a gem. Good strategic move there guys. Way to go.
Marie- no they won't compromise on the MW but they have also found out it is not the leverage that they thought it was. It is basically a Democrat issue that some inthe GOP went along with but not a standard for Bush or the GOP as it is for Dems.
CC - This type of politics will be their undoing. They by their own actions are their own worst enemy. The great thing is that before November 08 the electorate will also see them for who they are and that should bode well for the GOP at the polls!
LOL! I didn't know that and I thank you for the great news and the laugh. BWAAAHAAAHAAA! It's really too funny! :)
Increases in minimum wage have NEVER hurt our country.
Why do you guys get EVERYTHING wrong.
Also, Pelosi accomplished the House Majority Agenda in less than 100 hours - it took 35 hours.
Bush is the one vetoing a troop funding bill. It is the congress who has the power of the purse strings. The framers wanted this so that some petulant little Dauphin, like you Bushie, can't lead us over the cliff.
And if they have to vote on min wage again, they will. The will, and it is the will of the American people.
Funny how the American People are enemies to the rightwing of this nation. But it's right here on display, for all the world to see.
Mudkitty - you just don't get it. The Dems are NOT using their Constitutional powers to de-fund but trying to bypass the Constitution by micro - managing and usurping the authority of the CIC that is ILLEGAL BY CONSTITUTIONAL STATUTES!!!!
Also the minimum wage increase is damaging since it will
1. cause layoffs as companies cannot meet the increase in payroll, so either higher paid employees will be let go or minimum wage employees will.
2. Any mandated wage increase will be passed on to the consumer which will cause prices to go up and slow consumer spending which will slow the economy and consumer confidence in the economy.
3. with layoffs, unemployment will increase which is a key indicator of a slowing economy. Right now we are at what is considered full employment and have been for quite some time. The increase will end that as employers are forced to cut back and stop hiring because of mandated increases.
4. the new job market will dry up because employers will not be able to meet mandated wage increaes and as such will halt or greatly slow down hiring.
5. Unions will use this as a means of demanding pay increases from large companies and as such those companies will either cease to grow or greatly slow in growth which will effect the job market, the GNP, inflation as prices go up and business expansion which drives the economy!
So now tell me how a mandated wage increase helps the economy and the country!
By the way you and everyone else knows that the Dems were not elected because of a mandate but because of a backlash to the GOP.
They only claim they have a mandate because it sounds good in a sound bite.
If they truly thought they had a mandate from the American people they would use their true Constitutional authority and de-fund the war since they falsly believe it is lost and force the troops out legally.
They know they not only DO NOT have a mandate but that any move like that would be political suicide. They also know that their lying rhetoric about the war being lost is also a bunch of crap otherwise they would not continually back away from it when challenged or when questioned by the people.
Wake up Mudkitty and smell the coffee. Your Dems are in the process of destroying the economy, surrendering this country to Islamic radicals and killing our soldiers with their signal to the enemy of defeat and surrender.!!!!
What do you want to bet that there are benchmarks and timetables in the bill that ultimately gets signed?
And, what do you want to bet that there is a federal minimum wage increase this year?
Bush's failed occupation and his most recent troop escalation plan is not doing nothing to bring about a reconciliation in the Iraqi political landscape. Ultimately, that is what will decide success or failure - not more troops.
Increasingly the country is turning against the occupation and Republicans in Congress are not going to set up another election rout by supporting Bush unconditionally. Mitch McConnell, Boehner, and Blunt were all openly talking about setting benchmarks yesterday.
Hey LL - you say tomato, I say tomato.
Please tell me you not saying that that power of the purse is really just a rubber stamp?
We Dems are trying to save the country from a bumbling idiot, and the people who support him. It's because we love our Nation that we despise Bush & Co. This Administration has brought us closer to fascism in our history, in the name of terror and fear, than any other single administration to date.
(Fascism, not being the same as Nazis - so don't go confusing the two because I'm not comparing Bush to Hitler.)
Also - KT, every single point you make about the min wage is a false talking point. But more importantly, it's just false. History and social science prove it. Just because you make a list, doesn't mean it's true. And believe me, in this case, the stats are very much against you, as well as the logic.
Wake up and stop drinking the koolaid.
I wouldn't expect Mudkitty to be able to provide facts, so allow me to reference at least one study.
http://www.epionline.org/study_detail.cfm?sid=100
"To test this claim, Daniel Aaronson and Eric French examined government-collected price data. In a series of studies over the last four years, Aaronson and French show that a 10 percent hike in the minimum wage increased restaurant prices on the whole by 0.7 percent, and prices at limited service establishments by 1.6 percent. This result, in combination with other information about the restaurant industry, can be used within a formal model of the labor market to infer the impact of a minimum wage increase on employment. They find that employment losses of 2 to 2.5 percent following a 10 percent increase in the minimum wage would be consistent with their estimated price responses."
Employment losses of > than 2%, and concumer price increases of .7%. It seems as if there are negative results.
Of course, there are some positive results anticipated, and that is higher earnings among the lowest qualified people in our society. I don't know about you, but minimum wage workers where I live are pathetic. They show bad attitudes and poor customer service. I think they are overpaid now.
of course, the left thinks that people are owed something,a nd should have a particular standard of living regardless of their abilities or their performance. I wish my employers believed that as well.
Catfish,
Explain exactly what the Democrats have accomplished in 100 hours?
No body help her I want to see this!!
Mudkitty - you obviously have never owned or operated a business as I have nor have you ever been involved with or worked with coporate entities because if you had, you would not call this koolaid.
Additionally they are not talking points but facts based on experience and in dealing with people who actually have to make busines decisions.
Economic experts also agree that mandated wages hurt business and as such damage the economy.
By the way I have my own mind and think for myself thus do not need nor follow any Talking points because I have my own experiences and do my own research so get off the talking point band wagon and you consistant accusations that anyone who disagrees with you has know idea what they are talking about.
Actually, I have owned and operated several business and continue to do so to this day - Buzzer! Wrong again.
As an American Business Woman, I'm proud to pay my taxes...in certain cases, on a quarterly basis. That's because I am a true patriot, despite the fact that I am paying taxes to the Bush/Cheney rip of agents.
*****
2 cents...you're kidding right? They enacted their entire legislative agenda. Get it? Look it up.
Robert - you're "study" is complete horse shit. And as for the United States, not one single business has ever gone under because of the minimum wage...and every thing you will try to name will turn out to be an rightwing urban myth. Go ahead. Name one single business in all of the United States that ever went under because of the minimum wage. You can't.
Be careful Robert...don't get all excited when you think you find a single example.
In the end I think the American people will see the Left's idiocy
Funny how the American People are enemies to the rightwing of this nation. But it's right here on display, for all the world to see.
So is your idiocy.
I never said a single word about a business going under because of a minimum wage increase. The study I referenced simply showed that while many recieved a raise in wages, more than 2% recieved a pink slip and everyone else paid higher prices at the point of sale.
One of the voices in your head must have been louder than the other, and you should probably tell them they need to use their inside voices to avoid being seen as an idiot.
Would you care to provide something of substance that would show the study is invalid? Or do you prefer, as usual, to simple run off at the mouth?
But for the sake of argument, let us say the study is 100% valid. It reflects a 10% increase in the minimum wage with the stated results.
This one is far more than 10%, and is round numbers is 40% of the current wage enacted over two years.
If a 10% increase caused a 2% employment loss, what will 40% bring?
Oh DG - do tell, just when IS the so-called "end" your calling for? Just when?
And why address me here, when you can address me on your own site?
Haven't you ever heard of blogger ethics?
DG?
So far:
Not one of you can name a single business, large or small, that ever went under due to an increase in the min wage. EVER. Not in the history of the great United States of America.
Your rightwing fantasies are false. And falsehoods are lies. And lies, if you're a christian, are a sin. And the wages of sin, if you are a Christian is death.
Sin, as a word, is Chinese in origin; it's an archery term, meaning "missing the mark."
Rightwingers...this is not the only line of bullshit you are swallowing, hook, line and sinker.
Mudkitty,
This comment is not about the relevancy of this post. It is about your style of arguing your point.
How is it that you find the audactiy to challenge someone by asking that they prove their statements, when you have ignored every challenge that someone has offered up asking you to prove your statements?
In this comment stream alone, you have been asked to prove what legislation the Democrats enacted in their first 100 hours and all you have done is say they accomplished their entire agenda in the first 35. No proof. No substance. Nothing.
You have also been challenged to provide evidence showing that the study that Robert provided was inaccurate. What have you offered in response? Nothing. Not one statement supported by fact or evidence, just more leftwing rhetoric and diareah of the mouth.
Then you challenge someone for confronting you on this site and dare to speak of ethics of any kind. This still a free country. They can challenge you anywhere and everywhere they see fit. Also, ethics are probably not your strongest suit.
Finally, it amazes me that everytime someone challenges you that you probably have never done this or never been in that situation, that low and behold, (gasp) you have. How amazing for you to have such a wealth and breadth of experience over almost every subject approached. You should be out there running for office. No seriously please go run for office and perform a great service for the Conservative movement.
Your arrogant behavior and insulting nature are disgraceful. Your inability or unwillingness to answer any challenge leveled at you prove your ineptitude. Your intollerance for any other view and your assumption that you are superior to everyone who differs from your opinion are typical of the attitude of a liberal. You cannot debate, so you attack. You cannot support your claims, so you defelct. You cannot justify your views, so you demean.
Right out of Liberalism 101.
Catfish,
2 cents...you're kidding right? They enacted their entire legislative agenda. Get it? Look it up.
I knew you wouldnt come up with ONE just ONE thing they accomplished! NOTHING!!
2 Cents - you don't even know what their legislative agenda was, do you? Obviously not, and you're just trying to cover your ignorant ass by playing indignant.
CC - I challenge assertions. Rightwing assertions. If you knew anything about logic, you would know that it's up to the person making the assertion to prove their assertion, not the one challenging the assertion (it's clear you've never taken a debate class, or a logic class, or a law class.)
Take law for example, it's not up to the defense to prove anything, it's up to the prosecution. A challenge to an assertion is not an opportunity for the challenger to prove their challenge, but for the person making the assertion to prove the assertion.
Same with logic and with debate.
Challenging the challenger with circular reasoning is called tautology - be careful when you try to deflect a challenge with a challenge to the challenger. Tautological reasoning is BS.
You have but to Google this congress to find out that they have enacted their entire legislative agenda in 35 hours...I'm not here to do your homework for you, as I've written many times.
Catfish,
But I challenged you lol
That makes YOU on the Defense lol
I asked for one accomplishment and you gave me NOTHING!
Inncorrect once again! And the hits they keep on coming.
I have challenged your assertions directly many times. You have yet to offer any credible evidence to any of your arguments.
When you do challenge some one and they bring back detailed credible verifiable evidence to support their position, you ignore it or pretend that it is irrelevant.
Furthermore your wild assertions about other posters make you look even less intelligent than you probably acutally are.
I was on my High School and College debate teams, I majored in Criminal Justice and minored in Computer Sciences (that minor required two seperate courses dealing with logic, that is a lot of what programming is).
Once again emptiness. You cannot support your claims so you attack those challenging your assertations. As I said, you prove our point nicely.
No Marie, I challenged you, and have all along. The whole tenor of my comments here are challenges to KT's posts, your comments, and other right wing comments. You guys really need to get it straight.
CC - support your claims. Period.
What do you mean support my claims?
What part?
You want my College transcripts? You want my High School debate records?
Catfish,
No Marie, I challenged you, and have all along. The whole tenor of my comments here are challenges to KT's posts, your comments, and other right wing comments. You guys really need to get it straight.
No Catfish I said name ONE thing the Democrats accomlished and I have yet to get an answer.
And I say, 2 cents, go look it up. Go to any congressional site. Google it. Do you own homework. You should know this already before you go off spouting.
And the fact is, I challenged KT's post/assertions.
CC, I knew I liked you. My BS (smirks accepted)is CJ, and my MS is Justice and Public Safety.
Good to know!
Catfish,
And I say, 2 cents, go look it up. Go to any congressional site. Google it. Do you own homework. You should know this already before you go off spouting.
And the fact is, I challenged KT's post/assertions.
That's what I thought!
You CANT answer because THEY HAVENT ACCOMPLISHED ANYTHING!
Now I suppose Sybil will appear.
My BS is in Econ which I received late in life after deciding to finally finish my degree.
Every single point on the economic effects of an artificial minimum wage increase that were brought up are correct.
As to no biz ever failing, I have news for you. My friend Owned a bingo business in Ohio. He was barely breaking even. Ohio Raised the Min Wage. He is now out of business.
In other words (far too many on your part CC) you do NOT dispute the FACT that the dems accomplished their 100 day agenda in 35 days.
CC? Assertion or challenge?
No. I assert that they have accomplished none of their 100 hours agenda within however many hours have passed since 4 Jan 07. This assertion is based on quatified fact from records of the Library of Congress.
The only one that they successfully accomplished, Minimum Wage Increase, they wasted away on a bill that was doomed to be vetoed. I say they successfully accomplished that one because it passed the House and Senate with a Presidental promise to sign the legislation. Now it is dead.
I will allow that within the past few days they have passed the Hate Crimes legislation, which expands the language used to define hate crimes, but that bill is probably bound for a veto as well.
So, my assertion (if that is what you prefer calling it) is that they have accomplished none of their 100 hours legislation.
My challenge to you is to prove me wrong or accept the facts I have provided you with.
Well than your assertion has as much to do with reality as polka dotted skies.
Prove your assertion. Provide evidence.
That means simply "Can't. Won't. Too lazy."
I have proven my assertion.
I have cited direct numbers from the Library of Congress.
I have cited specific House Bills and Resolutions to illustrate they type of things that have passed.
I provided you with a link to the source so that you might verify the validity of my statement.
You have done nothing but run at the mouth, as usual.
CCC - you mischaracterized, and misrepresented every citation. And conveniently left out so much. You not only lie by omission, but by commission.
It's up to the person who made the assertion to prove the assertion. What about that do you not get?
Have you ever taken a law class, a debate class, or a logic class? Clearly not.
Once again you made the original assertion that they have completed their entire agenda within the first 35 hours. I responded with a challenge and provided document prrof.
I assume that by being absolutely unwilling to offer up a shred of evidence supporting your original assertion that you are admitting defeat. Fine by me.
Oh and this is not a structured and metered debate. This is the real world.
If you have read any of the comments on this site you would know that I debated in high school and college (going to State UIL twice in high school). My major was in Criminal Justice with a minor in Computer Sciences (two required logic courses).
So yes I have done all of the things you assume I have not.
