DEMOCRATS BATTLE FOR LEADERSHIP SPOTS
Speaker of the House to be, Nancy Pelosi took an unusual step yesterday as she endorsed John Murtha for Majority Leader rather than Steny Hoyer the current House Minority Whip the number two man under Pelosi's Minority Leader status. As Minority Whip the transistion to Majority Leader usually follows when the minority party wins the majority in a new Congress. When Pelosi became Minority Leader, Hoyer was her main rival who gave the California Democrat a run for her money for the Leaders position. Some believe that her endorsement of Murtha is pay back for his earlier opposition to her for Minority Leader. Others believe that Murtha's well know stance and controversial statements about the war came into play in her decision to back him because of the Democrats developing posititon concerning a pull out of Iraq by June 07.
Pelosi during her reign as House Minority Leader coined the phrase, "culture of corruption, " in reference to the House Republicans and the problems during their tenure as majority. For her to now back John Mutha shows a very hypocritical move on her part if she was truly sincere about an ethically pure Democrat leadership of the House. Murtha was investigated and aquited in the ABSCAM scandal, ( The FBI created a front (Abdul Enterprises, Ltd., hence, Abscam) for its agents, who, posing as associates of an Arab sheik, offered selected public officials money or other considerations in exchange for special favors), in 1980 but was caught on tape stating that though he was turning down a $50,000 dollar offer he would be open to future possible pay offs after working with the company for awhile. Murtha has also blocked ethics proposals and is well known as a back room dealer. In endorsing Murtha, Pelosi has dealt a damaging but not fatal blow to Hoyers run for Majority Leader. She has pulled out all the stops even calling incoming Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel because of a New York Times report than Rangel was backing Hoyer. The vote for Majority Leader will take place tomorrow and a Murtha win will give total control of the House to Pelosi.
Another indicator of the, "ethics, "situation as Demcorats appoint lesser leadership positions is the House Intelligence Committee. The ranking member of the committee is Pelosi's fellow Californian Jane Harman who Pelosi has already indicated she does not favor to move into the leadership position because she is not partisan enough in some of her positions. The next ranking member is Florida's Alcee Hastings who in 1989 was impeached as a federal judge for bribary charges. An impeachment which was instigated by Pelosi. She now favors his appointment as House Intelligence Committee Chairman .
Democrats are showing with each day that passes post election that the stances that were taken during the campign in order to win votes are obviously NOT the platform that they will take into and push as they assume the leadership of the House and Senate. They have made a reversal in their campaign stance on the war from a re-evaluation of strategy and a gradual redeployment as the situation warrents campaign stance to a full pull out by June 07 now. From a promise to not touch taxes except those effecting, "only the rich, " campaign stance to a repealing of all Bush tax cuts now. A no impeachment and investigation stance while campaigning to a hearings and investigation stance now to look into possible impeachment of the President. A conservative ploy as they campaigned on conservative ideas and now preparing a very liberal agenda as they approach the next Congress. Claiming bipartisan work with the President to his face in the two days after the election and now planning a very partisan agenda to fight the President. Claming the most ethical Congress in history and now backing very unethical House members for leadership positions. So which face are we to believe. The one shown to gain votes or the one that is showing now as they prepare for the next Congress. The face showing now is much more in line with typical Demcorats of the past and especially during the forty years that they held Congressional leadership. So it looks like at least for the next two years House and Senate Demcorats will return to the status quo that their their predecessors from the Fifties, Sixties, Seventies and Eighties pioneered for them. Well as the saying goes, " you can't teach a dog new tricks." Democrat politicians are proof of that!

Mudkitty, liberal is liberal and what the Dems are planning is FAR from conservative.
Lets see repeal the tax cuts - liberal.
Raise the minimum wage - liberal. Stop conservative judges -liberal.
Leave Iraq before the job is finished, (June 07 is the current plan) - liberal
Amnesty for illegal aliens which they supported before with Bush - liberal
Sounds as far from conservative as night is to day. Yet conservative ideas is what they ran on in the election to get votes. Now who is deceptive ?
Ken, can a leopard change its spots?
The emerging democratic leadership takeover more closely resembles a politburo than the congress of a democratic republic.
What do you expect from people who think people who defend our nation are so stupid that they get stuck in Iraq? What do you expect from a speeker of the house who marches with NAMBLA? What do you expect from people who ask who the hell wants to live in Misissippi? What do you expect from a drive by media who deliberatly hides some stories and promotes others?
Ken, what is your concern about Murtha? He was cleared by the House Ethics Committee and was cleared by a grand jury of any wrong doing. There is no evidence that he committed any crime, and there is no evidence that he engaged in unethical behavior.
Bringing up 26 year old allegations that proved unfounded seems a little desperate to me.
Given that Murtha is both pro-gun rights and anti-abortion, and that the Dems (witness the Lieberman campaign) have little use for anyone who isn't 100% behind their agendas (how like Karl Marx), I think there's a lot more to Pelosi backing Murtha here -- I believe that he's been "earmarked" to spearhead their cut-and-run agenda for Iraq.
When he was slurring our troops and demanding "redeployment", the Dems and the MSM endorsed his every word with reminders of his "credentials" as a combat vet. They'll continue to do this whenever they perceive an advantage in doing so.
Hey, I've been saying for several years now that liberals are the true conservatives these days, since the republicans are so radical.
Mudkitty is not worthy of responding to... so I won't.
Ken, all is not lost. Some of the Democrats elected are DINO's. Also, something little mentioned, God is watching. Have faith, friend. This is going to turn around and bite the butts of the Democrats big time, you'll see.
But the bottom line is that our biggest enemies, other than the Terrorists - of course - is the MSM. They brainwash the average American Joe, and do so with skill. Just like they have brainwashed Mudkitty. Shame on them!
She said she won't (respond to me) but she clearly did. She can't be trusted.
Mudkitty --
It seemed to me that Gayle was merely making an astute observation. You must admit that some of your observations could use just a tad more research, LOL.
God is watching? Now I understand Gayle.
Your sanctimony explains your hatred of Dems. Yes, I am sure that God actually only cares for Republicans and their policies. You can go on believing that, but I feel sorry for you. You will never be happy because you hate the majority of Americans. I will pray that you embrace unity and move on from your misguided hatred.
I am just curious, is Fox a part of the MSM, is the Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, N.Y. Post, etc.?
There are several comments running on this thread and all are appreciated at this site but one in particular was directed to me by Rob concerning a percieved concern about Murtha. So I will address this first. Murtha does not concern me and his ethics problems are not confined to the incident 26 years ago. He is considered one of the top 12 most corrupt representatives in the House because of his opposition to any ethics reform, ie yesterday he stated that Pelosi's ethics reform was, "a load of crap, " but he would still work with her. HE is a notorious back room dealer with anyone who will give him anything to enhance his fortunes, ( and not just money), or his status. Personally I would like to see him as Majority Leader because in that position he will be very visable and it will come back to bite the Dems because of his mouth and his poor ethics. Unfortunatly in doing so the country will suffer from his unethical behavior and radical statements so for that sake he would be a problem and a concern for everyone.
Mudkitty you still do not understand that conservatism is a set of values and beliefs that are the core of those who believe in them. They are how we live our life and make decisions based on these beliefs. It is not confined to politics but it encompasses all aspects of our life. Our personal values, economic habits, religious beliefs, morality and our politics. That is one reason why we have been troubled by the GOP because in some of their policy they have abandoned this set of ideals that we refer to as conservatism and that is why they are in the minority now. Not because of a political mandate for the Dems and their agenda but because the GOP drifted away from the very core of ideals that placed them in office in the first place.
Vern, the Dems did run on conservative ideas because they realize that the majority of this country is either conservative or lean that way and that is the only way they can win an election. Whether they truly believe it or not is another matter. Personally I don't think they do as is evidenced by the platform they are developing which is decidedly the polar opposite of conservatism. But that is how most Dems portrayed themselves during the campaign. Those in the GOP who are true conservatives ran on those ideals. But the anger against the GOP for abandoning the conservative platform that placed them in office even backlashed on very conservative candidates. Take Rick Santorum for instance. A popular Senator by conservative standards because of his conservative beliefs and his strong stance in following those beliefs yet he was caught up in the backlash as were many others.
I know exactly what conservatism is, and it aint radical rightwing republicanism.
Santorum was defeated because he lied about being a resident of Penn. State when his kids went to school in Virginnia, with no one inhabiting the Penn. residence.
He lost because he compare gay marriage to "man on dog sex."
He lost because he wanted to legislate his religion.
He lost because he bragged about bringing his wife's dead fetus home, and passing it around to his kids.
But mostly he lost because he's a Bush supporter and supported the invasion, and supports the occupation of Iraq.
No he wasn't "swept up." He lost it all by himself, and he should take responsibility for it.
