UAE PORTS DEAL: COULD IT BE FOR BASE ASSURANCES AGAINST IRAN ?

With the Congress investigating the sale of operational control of six major ports to the UAE and knowing that the President has been adamant in his convictions and his stance in protecting thise nation, I have been attempting to try and make sense of the Bush administrations unwavering support of this transaction. There is considerable evidence in my opinion based on pre-9/11 actions that the UAE was a terrorist sponsoring state. Granted that after 9/11 as has been stressed by the administration the UAE has been one of the strongest allies to the United States and possibly the strongest in the region. This still does not change my opinion that even though nothing changes in the operations of the ports and basically only the origin of the checks written and book keeping in essence is all that will change with the acquisition, logical wisdom says that the UAE having access to United States port security and because of shipping that originates from the ports possibly security of other means of transportation, that it becomes a definite security risk. So I asked myself why would a President who has been so adamant about protecting this country take such a political gamble that could make his Presidency more lame duck than is usual in the final years of a second term. Additionally is this acquisition as threatening as initial reaction has been ? Though I still believe the security risks are real the only answer that I could reach was the possibility that this sale is additional insurance for the United States to have a base of operations for a possible strike against Iran's nuclear build up, whether targeting the nuclear facilities or a possible invasion. I have no absolute prove but the logic of this assumption makes sense. Since our entrance into the region for the Afghanistan and Iraq military action the U.S. has been using Dubai ports for our naval vessels. In fact there have been more dockings of U.S. naval vessels in Dubai than anywhere else in the world save the United States. Additionally much of the air operations for both the Afghan and Iraq theatres has originated at the Al Dhafra Air Base just outside of Abu Dhabi the capitol of the UAE. The strategic location of the ports and the bases give quick response to the entire region and perfect location for any action against Iran because of the close proximity across the Arabian Gulf. Again this is only speculation on my part but it does answer several questions about the importance of the UAE to the United States and its importance as an active ally. Maybe the hearings will shed more light on this acquisition though if my hypothesis is true and Iran is in the sights to justifiably prevent a nuclear program I would hope that this would not be revealed in the hearings. Does make one think doesn't it ?

Sometimes I think we may read too much into "decisions" that are made. President Bush said he was unaware that such a transaction had taken place. I'm not on the bandwagon of "Bush lied" so I am predisposed to believe him. Further this sale was initiated by a UAE company towards a British company. They probably flew the plan for an approval run past the White House but some idiot probably had his rubber stamp out a little too quickly.

This was probably railroaded by some misunderstanding or some State Department idiots and should not have happened. Now that it has is a different story. I don't think we can piss those people off since they are crucial in the controlling of the Straight of Hormuz. Without them 25% of the worlds oil can be cut off by some morons with missiles sitting on the Iranian side of the straight.

I will keep harping on the all importance of that straight staying open or the whole world will surrender to Iran, starting with the French.

As long as we are speculating, how is this for a reason:

Treasury Secretary Snow was formerly the head of CSX. The Carlyle Group took a significant equity stake in CSX the same month that Snow was tapped to become Treasury Secretary. (a private firm run by well connected Republicans including Bush Sr.) See http://www.rense.com/general32/csx.htm.

CSX was just sold this month to Dubai Ports for more than $1 billion. Nice profit in the hundreds of millions of dollars for the Carlyle group on a 2 year investment. See http://news.moneycentral.msn.com/ticker/sigdev.asp?Symbol=CSX

Snow chairs the "Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States" (CFIUS) which made the decision for the administration.

Add to the mix former director for CSX, David Sanborn, who left and became a director for Dubai Ports International. He was responsible for South American operations when CSX sold its port operations in South America to Dubai Ports in 2004. (http://www.military.com/opinion/0,15202,87787,00.html)

Sanborn used to work for Snow at CSX and just left his post at Dubai Ports two weeks ago to accept the job as Assisstant Secretary of Transportation - Maritime Administration.

Amazing how two weeks later the Dubai Ports deal is announced. We also learned yesterday that the deal that was secretly negotiated allowed Dubai Ports the extraordinary luxury of not having to keep ANY paperwork on operations in the U.S. This is a complete sham of a deal for the American people.

Follow the money trail. With Bush, money talks and security walks. Let's see what comes out in the coming weeks.

I think Bush is working for the terrorists. Why else would he hand over our port to the same people who attacked us on 9-11?

again you fill the air with your hatred and ignorance. The UAE will not be hiring any one but USA citizens to work the docks. Further they said that they will not be replacing the management positions (perhaps they will replace a few select ones)(go to Fox News for an interview with a Vice President of the Dubai company)

So under your ranting you seem to be stating that American Union Dockworkers are terrorists. Now I may agree on the Unions being misguided but I would hardly call them terrorists of the same brand as Osama Bin Laden.

Please give some shred of thought to your rants before posting nonsensical, illogical, and unsubstantiated claims.

Turns out that the Coast Guard has serious concerns - which points to the failure to properly vet the deal - see the latest news.

You want to take chances with national security go ahead. There are certainly enough questions to warrant serious investigations.

The UAE was supporting terrorists and two of the attackers of 9-11 were from the UAE. Why does he need to hand our ports over to the enemy? Are they "wid us or agin us"?

"Had" is the operative word you were looking for. It is an abuse of meaning to imply that they still have said concerns when they have clearly been worked through already or they would not have given the thumbs up to the deal(which they did).

Of course there are going to be questions in an investigation but the point of the investigation is to answer those questions. There is no suggestion or evidence to raise any legitimate argument with regard to the process it went through.

TTC - Save your breath trying to convince me and give Senator Collins a call. Even after her closed door briefing of the process yesterday she walked out and said the review was weak.

I don't think it is worth risking national security because Bush, his family, and his cronies are in financial bed with UAE.

It is the United States that is, and has been, protecting the Emirs of the U.A.E. Our bases are there to protect them AND our interests.

If congress cancels this deal nothing significant will happen. The U.A.E. isn't about to throw us out. That would be the end of several important Emirs. I'm sure they like their power and billions of oil and financial dollars.

The Bush Administration has no excuse for this. Their lame reasoning is pure garbage. This is simple and shameful patronage at the expense of the U.S.

No port should be opperated by foreigners. I mean, we nationalized airport security, didn't we??

It scares me to see people make excuses for the President when he is wrong.

Wrong is wrong.
